Why aren't you guys discussing the most significant advancement in the medical field since Penicillin? Scientists have found that it's possible to turn Mouse cells into stem cells by giving them an acid bath, if this also works with human cells we could have much cheaper, completely ethical source of stem cells.

I have a question? Couldn't you also clone people "ethically" now as well if it works?

Because iPS stem cells have been available for years. The only thing remarkable about this research is the fact that ANYONE is still working on the cloning method of producing stem cells.

Yeah but these have all the properties of embryonic stem cells, iirc the others are still limited in their uses

lol fuck ethical concerns... like god cares if we can clone or not

iPS stem cells use known oncogenes to induce pluripotentcy. Not only do they have to genetically engineer the oncogenes into the cells in the first place, they have to get them out afterwards. The whole process is expensive and yield is horrible. In other words, iPS stem cells can give you cancer.

Being able to produce nearly-totipotent cells by dunking somatic cells into acid bypasses all the hassle with genetic engineering and would bring stem cell treatments into the mainstream decades ahead of schedule.

You didn't read the article I'm guessing.
They specifically state they don't divide/expand like normal ES cells. They didn't show it with adult mouse cells/it didn't work. Didn't show it in humans and it can be more difficult than you think translating these types of things across species.

You can replace the oncogene c-myc with glis1 and make iPS cells.
Additionally you can use mRNA transfected into the cells or proteins and get iPS cells. There are even methods being developed to use antibodies to replace factors for reprogramming.

It is a very interesting paper though

because there are so many fuckin consenting humans who want to be bathed in acid

holy shit do you even think

Any stock market tips? Which companies are going to start selling people body parts made from their own stem cells?

pH 5.7 is about as acidic as milk. Did you take high school chemistry?
