My dad indirectly discredited global warming by saying it was only the cycles of the sun (solar magnetic activity cycle). Does this claim hold weight? Is my dad crazy?

one asshat who has heard of solar cycles but is enough of a fuckhead to presume that it's the one and only possible cause of climate change doesnt mean he's 'discredited' global warming.
he's just offered up his fucking ignorant opinion.
nice

has always been the case

"Indirectly denied" was a poor choice of words. He pretty much denied it. My side of the conversation was more of a caused by man whereas his was pretty much solely due to Solar cycles.

Global Cooling

solar cycles complete once every 11 years. the trend on climate change goes on for much longer than that.
solar cycles alone arnt enough of an explanation.

There is actually an underlying longer-period cycle, but it still doesn't account global warming. A major often-overlooked hint that global warming is largely human-influenced is that the warming started at the onset of the industrial revolution. Also, I love how non-scientists often discredit global warming based on a very simple observation that the thousands of trained professional clearly already took account of.

Your dad is not crazy, just living on Mount Stupid.

Heres the skinny,

-earth constantly goes through climate change
-its rotation around the sun affects it
-its general axial tilt affects
-plants affect it
-we affect it

There is no one source, all of the above is responsible plus whatever shit I didn't mention.

Thats it, the end, move on.

Yes, but we can measure stuff and from those measurements we can estimate the potential change from each of these factors.
It isn't as opaque as you make it out to be.

The mechanisms for global warming are all real and there is no debate that global warming is a real phenomenon.

The actual global warming debate is over how much damage we've done thus far and how much more time we have before inland real estate becomes beachfront property. 20 years? 500 years? Who fucking knows anymore?

No one's going to give one single shit about global warming after Yellowstone erupts.

Hoping that a natural disaster will save us from our own mess is kinda dumb.

Except for the fact that it shows no signs of eruption.

I'd much prefer a global cooling event honestly.
