Physics was incredibly useful. All the low hanging fruit that engineers use these days was discovered a long time ago. Now physics progresses at a snails pace. It's not their fault, it's just ridiculously hard to do anything.

You have to build ridiculous stuff like pic related so you can resolve some picovolt signal buried in a mountain of noise. You will question your sanity every day as you rediscover phenomenon such as ground loops and capacitive coupling.

Your PI will not hire an electrical engineer that specializes in ultra sensitive instrumentation because he is 6 times more expensive than you. Also, physicists don't need to hire engineers because they understand E&M on a fundamental level right? Emergent complexity in measurement circuits are just minor details, you can figure it out as you go. Here's a copy of The Art of Electronics, that's all you'll need.

Yeah, no, physics isn't going to save the day, it's all the spin-off fields of physics like material science, nanotech, biophysics etc. that are going to change the future.

For the succes of the human race at the moment most energy related science is utmost important. economics is holding this back since they all say new energy aolutions arent economically viable. wich makes economy in some factor even negative. if nothing will change it most likely we will kill ourself in time. And i think music is very important for the human race, or any kind of relaxation. But those aren`t really studies... more like hobbies. Also studies like history are important to prevent poeple screwing things up and learning from the past. and in such ways everything has its value to the human race. Actually I, and most of my profession, are relatively anti-PETA. They monopolise the animal rights movement and crowd out dissenting opinions. Their own stuff is pretty hardline (i.e everyone has to be vegans) and their tactics (abuse, hatemail, association with convicted terrorists) are horrendous.

There are many much better AR groups (e.g the RSPCA) which are much nicer to everyone (including the animals they foster - PETA kills 90%+ of the animals it "rescues")

I am aware than the majority of poets, painters, writers, musicians, etc, are talentless assholes who are more concerned with their public persona than with their own medium of expression (and I place here even famous names like Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, the great majority of philosophers, Jim Morrison, all of the rappers, the majority of rockers, etc).

However, the supreme artists of the world, that few bunch of individuals like Beethoven, Mozart, Shakespeare, Bach, Michelangelo and Tolstoy are, in my opinion, some of the greatest minds of all time, and are on the same level of Newton, Einstein, Gauss, Euler, Maxwell and other great names of science. The joy I always find in their works is inexhaustible.
