I have to give a 10+ minute talk and have 2 days to prepare it.

What do? I've been putting off preparing because I'm nervous as fuck. There will be questions afterwards too.

We can't help you unless we know what the talk's about.

I'm more interested in how to give a lecture on a scientific topic without passing out or hyperventilating

works great for me

The most important thing is to understand that most people have no idea what you're talking about, and the rest just don't care and don't really listen.

This is true. It's infront of fellow students so most won't give a shit.

Xanax is a benzo, and benzos are addictive as fuck.

It is effective, though.

the more you focus on what you're gonna say the less nervous you'll be.

I've been doing a couple of presentations and been tutoring freshmen for quite a while now and the most valuable advice I can give you is, try not to learn your stuff by heart or your your presentations or anything, just try to understand what you are presenting as good and deeply as possible because planned presentations work never out the way you want them to. and the better you know your topic, the more freely you can talk.

>> No.6118466

Pretend that you hate them all and that they're all too stupid to understand what you're saying. Also, DO NOT make things up on the spot unless you know your shit ridiculously well. The less you deviate from your planned lecture, the better things will go. Thirdly, make eye contact and never correct yourself. People won't doubt you if you don't doubt yourself.

this is true.

1. prepare some interesting stuff,
2. rehearse once so you won't take too much time
3. go on stage
4. talk
5. get standing ovation
I just love giving talks, the most important thing is to give a talk tailored for specific audience, observe your audience, follow its reactions, squeeze in a joke to engage your audience.

Thanks for the advice.

I don't have to worry about being overprepared since I now only have this evening and tommorrow to prepare and make slides. I'll spend the extra time (if any) reading the material instead of rehearsing then.

I do presentations and the like all the time and I can definitively tell you this is one of the worst things you can do. Preparation is absolutely key when speaking to an audience. You will be nervous anyway, but if you've prepared yourself well enough, people won't notice and the chances of something going wrong is much less than if you try to improvise.
Also, why post this on /sci/? >>>/adv/ would be a much better place to ask this.
