Anyone else decide that, hey, you're up at 4:30 anyway, you might as well stay up another hour and watch the Nobel Prize in Physics announcement livestream? It's available here:

http://www.nobelprize.org

And on YouTube at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MRqQQuvGzs

It's going to be Peter Higgs and CERN for the Higgs Boson, right?

Is there a lot of luck involved in getting a nobel prize in their respective field.

Don't get me wrong, I respect scientists and what they're doing, but there's so much to "explore" and fix, and it feels a bit random what they stumble over.

Or are the winners so a step beyond other scientists and that's the reason they can solve problems that earns them a nobel prize

Being that all the guys who theorized the Higgs are in there 80's , they need to give it to them sooner rather than later.

My Guess is they award it to goddam everybody involved. Including the theorists (Higgs, et all) and the CMS + ATLAS colloboration (all the people who were creditied on the Higgs discovery / papers ). It would be the first time awarding it to a "group" though. In the past the most it has been awarded to is 3 people at a time.

Then again, if they don't give it to the Higgs, CERN will freak the fuck out and unleash wrath upon europe....lol.

First of all; Why jump to sudden conclusions when you do not have the full list of nominates? Nor the full in-depth knowledge of who have a chance?

Second of all; They state that have "Found the higgs-particle" but... i got two things about that. 1. They mentioned/say that in order to actually find the "Higgs-particle" than you have to at least make another 2-3 years investigation to confirm it. Since researching stuff like this do take a lot of time/patience. 2. How can it be so accurate? Because you could generally go and say that if they used old data (which it clearly shows they did) then how is that old data any relevant to the current once?

Thirdly; Noble-Prize in general is only for two "kinds of people" these days. (Bad kind) Fame/Public image or (Good kind) the once that actually makes a difference.

P.S: Chelsea manning (Former Bradley) have been nominated 2 years in a row now for a Noble-Prize specifiably the Peace reward of his leaks, and has yet to get one. Some even get Noble-Prize about 3-5 years after the actual event occurred.

Well, that's what one of p-chem profs thought about de Broglie. Whether that opinion is widely shared is another matter.

IIRC the guys who discovered the CMB 'stumbled upon' it - they weren't looking for it at the outset, they set out to investigate something else. That doesn't mean they are average or shitty scientists though.

It's short for "Large Hydron Colider" which is set between Scheiwz and the boarder to another country. It is an underground facility that was built for science purposes, but not many know about it. You gotta keep in mind that this Facility was just recently finished building back in 2008/2009, and it has been on-going since it was finished.

Last year they decided to shut it down for 1 year (most likely because of higgs-bison), in order to collect/analyze all the data they have had for the last years of it being online/operative.
