6052026 No.6052026[DELETED]  [Reply] [Original]

>Working with colleagues at the Harvard-MIT Center for Ultracold Atoms, a group led by Harvard Professor of Physics Mikhail Lukin and MIT Professor of Physics Vladan Vuletic have managed to coax photons into binding together to form molecules -- a state of matter that, until recently, had been purely theoretical. The work is described in a September 25 paper in Nature.

>"Photonic molecules" behave less like traditional lasers and more like something you might find in science fiction -- the light saber

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/09/130925132323.htm

mind = blown

Also

>But it feeds into the bigger picture of what we're doing because photons remain the best possible means to carry quantum information. The handicap, though, has been that photons don't interact with each other.

Until now.

This is fucking exciting.

so explain in layman terms what the benefit of this is?

Light sabers?
Super Duper Quantum Computers?

How many years before this is actually viable to mass market?

>> No.6052060

You need a vacuum chamber filled with cryogenically cooled rubidium atoms for this to work. So, no actual lightsabers. This is all about getting individual photons to couple to transfer quantum information.

It's always over sensationalized to appeal to laymen so they fund it.

>Light sabers?
thats just popsci lets-make-it-sound-interesting-bullshit, its like gravity is like a ball on a rubber sheet

>Super Duper Quantum Computers?
this will enable ways for light to interact in a way that preserves its quantum states and allow them to be used for computation, which is the hardest part of making a quantum computer

This reminds of something I read by Feynman that there are 3 types of question that lay people usually ask
1) what are the applications?
2) what are you working on?
3) What are stars made of?
and more people are usually interested in the first or 2nd one.
or words to that effect

Not forces. **The** Force. Fifth fundamental force, the weakest of all, weaker, than gravitation. Has biological (macro) carriers. I believe it is still to be discovered. Biology is still an undiscovered country, a dark palace, an uninspected rectum, if you will. Many secrets it contains unrevealed. In not-so-distant future we probably will treat psychics as today we treat mobile phones.

Toys? Computers enhance human capabilities. Especially in regards to science and engineering. Discoveries that help improve computers will indirectly aid all other research and development efforts. Including research into global warming and other serious problems.

ok wtf. the real point of this experiment is to help find a way to improve quantum computing and what does this article do? IT HIGHLIGHTS A FUCKING ANALOGY!!!! i fucking hate people...

>> No.6053630

fuck off op. This article is a pinnacle of what you can call stupid. It is impossible to create lightsabers, its anti science, its bullshit. And the experiment was about "kinda" interacting photon pairs. This thread might be on /b/ but not here.

>> No.6053632

>>6053625
Actually it's a bad analogy: in star wars there was no photon-bonds, it was just really thick, range-limited lasers. The problem is range-limitation here.

Yeah, in the same fashion heavier-than-air-flying-transport was criticised some time ago.

>> No.6053637

>>6053632
Wow, birds are heavier than air but can fly thus it is possible to make a bigger bird.

Lightsabers dont exist IRL, there are no technology and it cannot be created because science has rules that say its impossible like conservation of energy for example.

But wait you are another overhyped neckbeard without education.

>> No.6053638

>>6053637
You won't believe it, but:
- Plains didn't exist at the time too, as the responsive technology;
- Conservation laws don't contradict any of these two concepts of lightsabers.

>> No.6053720

Wouldn't we need a perfect mirror of some type to stop the photons from escaping the chamber? Perhaps a super strong, heat resistant nano filament groups, that extend to the length of the saber upon button press, with relays which create a gravity well that acts to enclose the rubidium chamber and keep the light internalized.

Since light moves slowly in the cold gas the effect of gravity might not have to be that strong to bend it back on itself. The light molecule might be even more stable if there's an opposite pathway of slow photons.

>> No.6053730

>>6053720
1. Lightsaber's saber part is by definition hot.
2. Good luck creating local gravi-field modulator powerful enough to keep photons from leaving. Even in theory it'll just form a black hole.

>> No.6053741

>>6053730
Well the trick really is a) creating a gas chamber that doesn't interfere with the function of the lightsaber and b) interalizing the light to form a sword shape.
