What is it with autism that give a kid a chance to either be a useless dependent or a fucking genius?

Im assuming the article is an example of the "useless dependent" variety.

>> No.6048169

First off, autistic people aren't retarded, period.

Autistic minds tend to struggle conforming to illogical concepts and that's why the majority have bad social skills. The geniuses tend to develop fixations towards logical thought and things in general and the things that they are fixated to don't always have to be popular or conventional.

Also I know your image is supposed to me ironic however, mocking the person in it is imbecilic for reasons that shouldn't have to be explained.

Because "autism" is a catch-all label for anything from slight social awkwardness to complete inability to function.

There's not much reason to consider everything on "the autism spectrum" to actually all be part of the same thing. It's like "the schizophrenic spectrum", "the Kinsey scale", or IQ, where psychologists are arbitrarily assigning people points on a one-dimensional scale based on some vague superficial similarities.

here we go

>> No.6048271

The answer is that autism isn't at all the same person to person. We already knew that, but if you think that the kids who spend their days mute, rocking in corners and smearing their shit on the windows have the same disease as the ones winning nobel prizes, well, don't. We're in the infancy of understanding it, so you can expect that we don't have a 100% accurate picture.

The definition of "autism" should be broken up into a couple dozen different diseases; in a way it is (hence the spectrum of light -> severe etc). However people just lump it under an umbrella term (like cancer). A lot of people are still in the dark/still trust things by hearsay rather than examining evidence, and so there's still a lot of misconceptions about causes of autism (hurr vaccines, hurr bad parenting etc). It's genetic. It can be caused by chromosomal inversions and translocations (among other things, but those are the big ones), and different locations for these events probably lead to different symptoms; it really makes perfect sense once you think about -why- ... switching the locations of proteins around on chromosomes exposes them to different levels of genetic silencing/insulation from where they were meant to be at. Thus, certain proteins are produced at rates different from normal, and if these affect brain function, then that damn well could cause strange things to happen in brain development if these intended balances were off-target from birth.

However, people don't really talk too much about the genetic evidence for it, as it seems to be not common knowledge at this point. Also, practically no one goes and gets their genomes sequenced as part of the diagnoses, because practically no one gets themselves sequenced period (yet). Whenever sequencing becomes a standard medical procedure though, and we get reams of further data, that might allow us to attempt to map specific chromosomal mutations to sets of autistic symptoms, so we can start naming the individual problems.

>Autistic minds tend to struggle conforming to illogical concepts and that's why the majority have bad social skills.

> People with assburgers actually believe this.
Social behavior isn't illogical, it's something so complicated that general logical ability isn't enough to engage in it in most cases - like bipedal walking or natural language. Neurotypicals have specific brain functions for social behavior which autists lack.

To answer OP, my guess is that because of the above, social pressure simply drives autists into developing the talents they do have, if they have them. Many autists are pants-on-head-retarded because they're average or below-average people minus social skills. It probably also helps that the mind isn't as occupied with social skills in cases where they're properly raised, making above-average autists even more above-average people.

>>6048198
I though the spectrum was one-dimensional too, but it's actually a set of twelve labels each with their own severity. You know - like an actual spectrum.

>>6048271
> it really makes perfect sense once you think about -why-

Oh, bother, another kid who has memorized some elements from basic biology and thinks he can use it to make judgment calls about science.

People with autism have their brain functions more spread out across the brain than neurotypicals. Unless you can explain - without looking it up - how proteins do that, why it's universal among autists when you claim it's several different genetic errors, why autists are more likely to have related symptoms as well, and why autism probability doesn't increase with age of the mother like down's syndrome, don't say it "makes sense" that autism is caused by genetic errors. And more importantly, don't ever again believe something is correct because it makes as much sense as this seemed to make.

I think the social skill problem is more of a result of them being too literal.

They try to use real self awareness instead of fake self awareness, which prevents them from seeing anything in relation to themselves.
