What things are considered socially acceptable? Is it the pool of knowledge that has spread via social over many years, and that knowledge is now considered common good in society? Is it something we're used to, but if so, who is "we"? I don't understand conformity, is it a reliance on prior knowledge so we do not need new good ideas? Why is something considered incorrect to intellectuals? Is it because it doesn't make sense based on their prior knowledge? Is it not more intelligent and therefore above what's considered socially acceptable, to have knowledge of your own, and base your judgement on your own pool of knowledge? Why can we not create new pools of knowledge? What is knowledge (to modern day intellectuals)? The standard definition? Then what is conformity? You only accept certain types of knowledge? It seems to be based around the human ego; for example: moderators using their rank to appear as an upper social class; whether they deserve their gratification is a matter of opinion. There may be those who are conformed to the gratification of moderators, then it is in their opinion that moderators should be gratified, and this foundation has become socially acceptable to them. That does not mean it is "acceptable", generally, or correct for that matter. Then why are modern day intellectuals considered intellectual if their cause is based around what had become socially accepted? Einsteins theory of energy is socially accepted, but that does not mean it is correct, it just helps the others who can benefit from his theory. Therefore it is a matter of the human ego, and not intelligence. Because it is beneficent to you, does not mean it is correct for the both of us, and when the term 'conformity' is mentioned, what is 'socially acceptable', cannot be based more on self-proclaimed expert theories than it is on the common persons theory

The science community is always ready to condeme anything non-standard. No one wants to loose there jobs. It is only hobbiests like me or maybe even you, who are free to follow our imaginations.

Linguistics is such an interesting science to study in college because it is still just a baby compared to physics and chemistry. In my studies so far we have actually covered two complete separate paradigms for how to look at language - one developed by the one Noam Chomsky and one by Langacker. To my knowledge they are the first two paradigms to be made.

What's really interesting is how to see parallels from the past happening currently. Chomsky's theory worked well at the beginning, but as people found more and more examples against it instead of just formulating something else he kept sort of tacking on rules - kind of like how Ptolomy kept making the nature of planets more and more bizarre.

Then Langacker comes along and writes a complete new theory based on how our brain processes language, Cognitive Grammar. This is kind of like Kepler's Laws. About 80% of linguists are still with Chomsky, but many on the west coast and my professor (and me) are on Langacker's side, or believe he is at least on to something. Chomsky is kind of stagnating at this point, but what scientist doesn't when he's in his 80's

My point is, as a linguist, we don't really have the opportunity to follow what we are taught because we still are not sure about our field and there are conflicting paradigms presented right now

This. Its absolutely true.

I spent a couple of nights trying to understand a theory of the universe by some guy who works in a bar. Just because he works in a bar doesn't mean its wrong and this is obvious.

Since general relativity is flawed seriously and I don't yet understand his theory, I am still more open to his than Einstein's.

Yeah, I fucking rant and rave about the conformity problem and these fucking pseudo-intellectuals all the time but it doesn't seem to click in their brains.

You will find only VERY few intelligent people on 4chan and this board is a clusterfuck of conformity. Clear by the abundance of racism, sexism and disdain of anyone with a different thought. What I do is pretend to conform to people and think quietly to myself since I understand almost no one will agree with me.

I could go on and on and on, but you already said a lot. Good luck man and yeah, its hard having people laugh at you and believe in fallacies so adamtly.

Look, I don't know if you're really being serious but things become socially acceptable because of the altruism that was built into us by evolution. Humans and other animals needed to cooperate in the wild to survive and those who refused were excluded from the pack. Therefore we become more moral by natural selection.
Your next topic was conformity. Conformity is related to the same herd mentality - desire to be accepted by the in group. You ask whether we should reject all knowledge but of course the answer is no. The aim of the scientific method is to draw conclusions that are verifiable by repeatable experiment and so it holds more weight than random ideas without proof. Science predicts outcomes, its that simple. Both relativity and religion are commonly accepted but one has a higher truth value than the other.
You can argue that I have seen little of this with my own eyes and that is true. However I have nothing that goes against my assumption that science as a whole is not a deceitful enterprise and I have seen many small confirmations of its predictions as well as large ones (like computers). Therefore the sensible thing to do is to accept it as true.

People think with their emotions and based on evolutionary inclinations. An example of this is the fact that majority of people on this board supposedly have above average intelligence but there is prevalent misogyny and racism on here regularly. If they all were infact extraordinary in a positive sense it would a contradiction to the nature of the concept because being special would be the norm hence making nobody special.
