Why haven't we built one yet?

we don't have the parts.

but srsly we don't have the steel production to build such a thing

>> No.6008241

1. Takes a fuckton of fuel just to get the parts for the ISS into orbit and that's nothing compared to a Deathstar.
2. Asteroid mining isn't there yet.
3. The US alone already has the capability to completely annihilate an entire country.

*annihilate the world.
fixed
oh nvm
we are down to 5,113 warheads (as of 2010)

My point exactly .
We can kill ourselves just fine as it is.

Not sure what powered it, could you create artificial star inside essentially making the whole thing a mini Dyson sphere, also would this have enough gravitational pull to let people walk around the corridors normally?

>> No.6008274

>>6008267
a reactor!
no they wouldn't be able to walk normally
not only are the floors the wrong way on the death star
the death star is the size of a moon (probably our moon)
The 1/6th of gravity felt on our moon would be the maximum gravity felt on the death star and would only exist at the surface.
The gravitational pull would slowly diminish as you get further into the space station
see: shell theorem

>> No.6008278

>>6008274
forgot that the space station would be built out of a different material than the moon.
let's say the moon is mostly silicon with weight 28 g/mol
and the space station is 56 g/mol
so it might be around double that of the moon.
so only a 1/3 (still only at the surface)

Since the whole thing looked hollow why didn't they design the corridors to curve around the shell? Seems like that would make more sense

science fiction!!!
actually you know what i think they have a mix
When they fly into the hangar the gravity is clearly shown to be going towards the south pole.
But when people are in the turbolasers they have the gravity towards the center.
1/6 gravity definitely makes walking a weird challenge and it would be that low around a little less than half way (no i'm not going to do the shell calculation).

also most science fiction has artificial gravity so they don't have to pay huge costs for parabolic flights. (or making sets on the moon)

Shit like this the government will always examine its feasibility in practical-application but the problem with a death-star type mega-structure is the resources needed to build it.
Not to mention the unknown problems that macro-engineering, or zero-gravity construction might cause considering the fact we really haven't done much work as a species in either of these fields with the exception of conceptual art and theoretical thought experiments.

And on some more ridiculous shit, a petition was created on the white house website to create a deathstar. 25,000 people signed it and got a resonce from the administration that read:

The Administration shares your desire for job creation and a strong national defense, but a Death Star isn’t on the horizon. Here are a few reasons:

The construction of the Death Star has been estimated to cost more than $850,000,000,000,000,000. We’re working hard to reduce the deficit, not expand it.

The Administration does not support blowing up planets.

Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship?

omg source?
that's hilarious.
