They get shouted down in the face of the enormous amount of information that every person is exposed to on a daily basis.

That and the huge difficulty any normal person has in telling whether someone is truly informed about a topic or just overly-confident in their own knowledge.

We've also gotten to the stage where the most important factor in spreading an idea around the world is how much money you can afford to throw behind it, especially if it's an idea which has the potential to take a slice of any large company's pie.

Former scientist here.

Everyone I knew as a scientist did it because the work was interesting. Science is exploratory and we cannot know if the end result will be, say, a cure for the world's ills or what will finally kill us all.

We certainly don't do it for the money, pay stinks and since my salary was insufficient for paying down my student loans I went to industry and got a job as a programmer.

Secondly all living things consume nutrients and expel waste; this is part of the definition of life. The thing is though that what is human waste is food for bacteria.

The only issue here is rate of consumption, business and politics. Scientists are never heard unless it is in the interest of the already made up opinions of those who lead.
