Okay /sci/ help me out here. I want to design a portable shelter than can be used on Mars or another planet/moon for a sci-fi story.

It needs to be able to be carried by one person and set up easily, and be able to keep the occupant safe until the storm subsides (we're talking hours to days, or maybe even weeks).

Given the fact that Martian colonisation is going to happen within a few decades, I guess it's important that something similar like this is made to protect explorers/colonists on Mars who get caught out of their shelters.

Dude...

Lemme tell you some facts. Martian atmosphere is so thin that the wind needs to reach 65 km/h for dust and 130 km/h for sand grains to be moved by it. The up to 400 km/h winds on the surface of Mars aren't enough to put a man off his feet whereas the 300 km/h winds on the surface of Earth devestate landscapes. The bad thing about sand and dust storms on Mars is that they block the sunlight which is bad for solar powered stuff. But if you already have a battery powered life support suit you don't need extra shelter. And if you want to stay longer, neither your life support suit nor any shelter nor your spacecraft is enough to protect you from solar radiation. What you need is not a shelter but a magnetic field. And you ain't gonna get one. Not now and not in a few decades.

Mars have lower gravity, so you could carry a 90kg device with not much problem.

But of course, mars atmosphere is so thin that it can't push things around very well, so a hurricane on mars would feel like a fair breeze on earth

Anyone on Mars is going to be wearing a space suit. What would an additional shelter provide that a space suit would not? What threat would a storm actually pose?

1) Shelter does indeed protect you from radiation. A few inches of dirt would suffice.
2) It's not difficult to create a magnetic field, either.

Also I'm not sure what's your reasoning here. Maybe it's "wow, divided by 1000, there's almost nothing left!".
But that's wrong, it's still way too high for prolonged exposure.

OP talked about the wider scenario of colonization which obviously includes spending a lifetime there and walking around doing stuff. To that I was answering.
If you just want to live in a dirt cave and never see sunlight, you're already doing perfectly fine.
