Is there any point in using text books for colleges anymore?

>> No.5910833

I have had professors tell me that the school requires them to use a textbook even though it was not necessary and they are not allowed to tell you that it is available from anywhere except the campus bookstore.

Why not give degrees out to people, if they can walk in and pass the exam like how the IT world works with certifications?

Money. I'm sure if any universities tried to do this they would charge the price of a full tuition to get the degree.

Shekels is the reason why.

You could make more money by letting 100k people take the exam for 200 dollars, and force them to retake it every 3 years.

>rancid bait... ?
Sure, lots of textbooks contain useful info, pertinent and well presented, as well as exercises and in some cases (most especially for advanced coursework) the non-traditional-textbook resources aren't as good (yet).

When it comes to paying through the nose for the latest edition of some text wherein the fundamentals/important parts haven't changed in years... then no, hell no.

Universities need money, they are businesses remember?

like >>5910843

said they would charge tuition to get a degree.

You can sort of just come in to write exams. Just be one of those people who doesn't go to class but studies online or something.

I never used the current version of any book. always bought a earlier edition for no more than $15. majored in mechanical.

>>5910851

You can't just give degrees out. To get a degree you need specific grades in specific courses to meet degree requirements.

If anything you would have to write exams for every single class for the major you are in.

It would be at least 40 exams.
