How many hypergeniuses like Jacob Barnett are out there?

I mean I'd consider myself quite intelligent, but by far not as brilliant as him. I'm interested in mathematics and theoretical physics. Now I have been wondering whether I have any chance pursuing such a career, when there are people like him who could easily outperform me. If it's just him and like a dozen of other geniuses, there should be no problem, but if every uni has lots of them, I won't stand a chance.

Do you have any statistics on the number of geniuses in math and science?

>> No.5904051

just do what interests you and what you feel.. you might not get a wikipedia page like Newton but who cares man, at least you did what you wanted to do. You might not prove the biggest theorem, but at the end of the day, you'd be doing what you're interested in.

Kid is too deep in his own ego at this point. He is set on a tenured job, but I can't see him accomplishing as much as he could simply because it seems at this point he is doing it for flash instead of interest anymore. Maybe he will be humbled when he meets more smart people.

Terry Tao is more inherently smarter than this kid and he didn't get near this much attention ( parents probably did a good job of it ). There is plenty to do for everyone involved. And although people like him are very intelligent in obvious ways, it is not a given that they will outperform people of a more conventional academic history. You honestly can't know what you'll be able to achieve until you try. And besides you'll probably also meet people who weren't child prodigies but still seemingly smarter and more successful that you are. Everybody in academia probably had such a moment where they realized that they weren't the single most intelligent person on earth. You'll get over it.

I'd like to see him take a 4D or 5D rotation test. Essentially, he is presented with various projection of 4D or 5D models and has to redraw them rotated in a specific axis. The layman might be able to do this given enough time but if his claims are true then it shouldn't be any harder than the average person rotating a 2D or 3D figure.

This is what a child genius looks like. Apart from him not meeting the criteria, it doesn't end well.

Also, I remember watching a Panorama (or possibly Horizon) episode about some kid from India whose parents declared him a genius because he did a simple big of surgery (fixing a syndactyly hand) when he was 7 and thought he had a cure for cancer. Interestingly, he tested as being of above average intelligence in some areas and below in others. Also, the kid thought he had an idea for an oral cure for cancer but his ideas utterly failed under even simple scrutiny.

The attention this kid gets is horribly allocated. The praise and sense of accomplishment he was getting was almost like he solved fucking Goldbach's. If he takes this praise to heart, he probably won't do much with his genius.

What's with all these stupid tests?

You know what should be a quantifier of somebody's overall aptitude? Success. Stop with the penis measurements and start praising kids for accomplishing things that matter.

And while I don't swallow all the hype around the kid, I'm not going to say he isn't somewhat special. His rate of learning is incredible and he already managed to publish a paper, which is more than you lot have achieved at his age and probably even today. And with a past as a tutor I can safely say, that no, not everybody can learn stuff just as fast if their parents pushed them more.

Finally the speculation about his future fate is a misguided fantasy that fails to notice that the ones that burned out were often socially inept and introverted. This kid seems to do rather well in the social department, again probably better than a few losers on here.

I feel that when you're an asshole/shitty human being then the value of your work diminishes, if even a little bit.
Although this effect is largely dependent both on how much of a dick you are and how influential/useful your work is to people who have no relation to you, ultimately it is hard for me to disassociate a person from their work unless it has effectively been done for me.
Furthermore, so much about making an impact in whatever field you are in is effective communication. If you are an asshole, then that will be a whole hell of a lot harder than if you are amiable and humble and can get friends and colleagues to support and listen to you.

Also... two more simple notes:
1. So many more groundbreaking discoveries have been made by people who were not considered "geniuses" than those that were prescribed such labels early on in their career. (I find a generalized statistical argument can be taken here in lieu of specific data) I believe most "geniuses' "accomplishments granted them the fame required to achieve such a status.

2. Science is not done in a vacuum and hasn't been done in a vacuum in over 100 years. Anyone who sits in their own private lab and relies on only their own intelligence for success certainly is not deserving of the genius label.

>go to uni and drop out of two courses due to poor grades (IT and Engineering (Don't even know why I attempted it without the basics))
>complete a semester of Education, but it's literally learning the primary school syllabus all over again

I got a full time job after this and have had a lot of time to think about the mistakes I made. Having raw intelligence really doesn't mean anything if you're not willing to put in the work to learn even the most basic concepts. Even if you're of average intelligence, you can still do very well if you're willing to put in the time to study and apply the concepts that you're learning.

There's this one guy I went to school with all through primary and high school, and although I considered him to be one of the slower kids in primary school he's now one of the smartest and most well rounded people that I know. Some people just find things more difficult than others. The pre-calc guy might have been getting assraped by his father for the first 20 years of his life. I bet that would fuck up your ability to concentrate in class and learn shit at a normal rate.

The point: things you find easy are usually easy because you've been brought to that point by a certain path. Not everyone else has followed the same path (in the same time, etc.).

When I'm old as fuck, decrepit, and laying on my deathbed I'm not going to think about the kids in their early 20s who were already working on their postgrads when I started my engineering and physics education at 26.

I'm studying because I want to, because I have an aptitude for it and because I want to get answers to the questions I've asked since age 3.

I still think I'm dumb as shit. I can't get good grades to save my life. I just want to do well, so I put a lot of effort into my lab work. Publish early and publish often! Supervisors are willing to overlook mediocre grades if you've got your name on a few papers.
Not sure how it is in physics/ math, though

Many hyper-geniuses are actually fairly modest and likeable people (Think Terry Tao and John von Neumann), either because they're naturally cool or because they're smart enough to realize that you don't make friends by being a cunt about it.

I kinda feel sorry for Jacob Barnett for that reason. No doubt he's smart. Very, very, smart, that is. But your mother turning you into a walking press release (most likely for her own satisfaction - look at the way she injects herself into so many of his photos) and everyone treating him like a god because of it will do him no favors at all - particularly in the maths field, where people like Terry Tao exist and probably don't find his confidence all that charming.

Time will tell what happens. He might come up with the next Green-Tao theorem, or he might be the next Langan. We'll see.

Yep.
And say what you like about his ethics; von Neumann did more for ethics (via formalizing utility) than the vast majority of philosophers have ever done, ever.

Every neuronal connection is cemented via the basis and frequency of usage.

When a child's brain is first forming (within the womb), what a mother eats and her own quality of health is going to have the most to do with how the baby's body and mind develop (even after it's been pushed out).

Anyhoo, back the first clause. Whatever your mind happens to be focused on (the most), is how the neurons of your own brain are going to habitually react and connect to one another. Now, there are an infinite number of ways in doing math. Some people start out by counting fingers and toes, others, like Jacob Barnett and that one savant guy, see it visually within their own minds.

The more energy being put towards solving ANY problem will account for how easily a problem is solved. You need x amount of force to move object y. If one is able to view a problem from multiple sensory perspectives (sixth sense being taken into account, which is, imo, intuition), then the amount of energy firing in the brain makes it easier to solve a problem. Of course, you have to also take into account the DISTANCE bioelectricity is travelling when considering efficiency. So like, prefrontal cortex being responsible for things like language and simulation and internal reasoning, being close to the pineal gland (lol) which is supposed to be (as in thought to be) the house of all things intuitive, pref. cortex also being close to areas of the brain which deal with language in the left hemisphere, learning to utilize all of these together will actually equate to a faster processing speed, depending on how a person uses their brain. Could talk about this for hours, but...gonna leave it at that. NEUROPLASTICITY, SON.
