Does any of you know a good title for a dissertation proposal in a Math Phd? Preferably something scholarly?

Come on, /sci/, I know some of you have ideas.

Can you please specify this? Seems interesting.

Go to elementary and middle schools and see if there are numbers around the classroom. Also see if there's any subject taught that is somehow related to numbers.

You mean how numbers affect the education of students?

No, list where numbers appear in education. Clocks, pages of books, serial numbers on desks, etc.

That is a ridiculous thesis topic, even for education.

For math education, try proposing an unbiased and crucial study on the obvious socioeconomic and cultural disadvantages affecting youths in certain neighborhoods, and present a case for them by comparing them with neighborhoods where children are more fortunate. This would involve actually speaking with the children themselves, interviewing their parents/caretakers, having a hands-on look into how education is actually handled in certain schools in those depreciated neighborhoods. Do the same study with children from higher-end economic backgrounds; build a definite link between educational mileage and socioeconomic/cultural opportunity. Take into account emotional distress, sociological perceptions and other accounts. Incorporate statistics in your study to strengthen any hypothesis you may have had before the study, or to discredit it.

For once, I'd like to see a study which takes into account all of those aforementioned topics instead of just quoting statistics/numbers/nonsense. Write a fucking thesis worth something; not just another binder that is to be pushed on the cabinet of a University library.

Signed,
Someone in a Mathematics graduate program who has seen useless and even laughable thesis topics.

Another idea is to present a research topic on the presence of governmental effects on education. Do a study on the No Child Left Behind act, or Bloomberg's fucking destruction of the NYC Public school system.

Did you know that CUNY(City University of New York) is suffering right now due to Bloomberg(in part)? Bloomberg and his cronies completely eviscerated the public school system and several kids are graduating with sub-par mathematics and reading skills. By law, the CUNY community colleges are required to take any student who is not ready for the 4yr University, but they're being fucking overstuffed.

The CUNY Community Colleges are actually experiencing overcrowding problems much like public schools are in NYC. Furthermore, there are several offshoot programs in the CUNY system now which take the students in before they begin the semester officially and teach them. This is essentially a remedial-before-remedial course. Can you believe that? To get into a remedial, you have to take another remedial.

BMCC, Borough of Manhattan Community College, recently created another mathematics class because the students are so under prepared, they can't handle 2x=2. They literally have to go back to the basics of 1+1=2.

Shit is bad. And no one is writing anything on the fucking topic. It's pretty disgusting.

But I don't think my professors would actually care about CUNY.

CUNY is only the beginning. It doesn't have to be about CUNY, it could be about another university system or College education in general. I was just giving you an example with CUNY because I live in NYC.

Here is a list of some thesis titles in Mathematics recently published from universities near me:
>Set theoretic and topological characterisations of ordered sets
>Absolute instability in curved liquid jets
>Independent sets in some classical groups of dimension three
>Genus zero systems for primitive groups of affine type
>Theory and Examples of Generalised Prime Systems
>Joint state and parameter estimation using data assimilation with application to morphodynamic modelling

Also you didn't specify which field.

Did you know that society is suffering because we're trying to educate everybody?

It's fucking disgusting that we're trying to improve people's lives. Lots of people are only getting marginal benefit from their state subsidized education because professors who are just as disgusted as you and I.

Fucking Bloomberg.
