Came across this video earlier.
Surprised it hasn't gone viral.
What does /sci/ think?

Do you think the scientific community should feel obliged to promote such ideas, just like people like Sagan and Attenborough?

>politicization of science
Nein, danke.

>> No.5850557

pop scientists like sagan are leeches who suck up public science funding to fund their books and tv shows which amount to fiction, serving no actual scientific purpose. also, OP strikes me as having homosexual mannerisms

>> No.5850578

>>5850548

I guess I didn't make it quite clear. This isn't about politicization of science. Science itself won't change. But this is about how we promote science to the general public. People who understand it well (i.e. the scientific community) would come out and offer solutions to the world's biggest problems (such as bio-environmental sustainability and sustainable energy), but with a rational approach.

>>5850557
I don't think this is about publishing books and personal gain. You're forgetting that science is not solely about directly contributing to the research but also about spreading the ideas to the general public AND more importantly encouraging future generations to pursue these paths.

People like Sagan have been the inspiration of many scientists in our generation, and that is one of the most contributions to science and human knowledge that any of us could dream of making.

The video is quite well-made. I'd love to see more Sagan quotes turned into videos like this. Seems like it came out recently so I guess it will eventually accumulate more views.

Cool man. I managed to get in touch with the guy who made it (asked him for the thumbnail too).

I'll ask him if he plans to make any more. Would be cool to see a Feynman one as well.

Since when? Sounds like you need to lay off the popsci rubbish.

Since always. I'm not presenting some weird new idea here. I'm just saying inspiring future scientists is important.

I don't understand what your problem is with popularizing science and encouraging more people and especially future generations to get involved.

Science isn't meant to be some exclusive esoteric club for the cool kids.

I think a lot of them do. But changing the overall mindset of people and making them actually care probably requires more time and effort.

Like the video.

Was having a similar conversation with a physicist friend of mine recently.

a bit on the pop science side but what can you do? if you don't make science interesting for the masses you won't get the funding for the professionals

>> No.5850701

>>5850624

we don't need people who are motivated into science because of Godel-Escher-Cock. they make terrible scientists, every last time. in the unlikely event they manage to get a PhD, the absolute best they'll accomplish is to be some nameless lab bitch, who secretly was only hired out of pity anyway.

Good scientists didn't become that way because of Sagan. They became that way because of Euclid's Elements, or Feynman's lecture notes, or Shulgin's TIHKAL, etc. etc.

I prefer OP's. Better sound quality and it has more potential to be shared around.

But then again, the original has Sagan in it, so it's a tie.

I don't know if it's only one guy who is anti-popsci in here, but I have to say I'm with you.

I hate all the popsci bullshit I see everywhere. Hardcore, nuts and bolts, concrete science culture has been gradually infiltrated and replaced by touchy-feely, 'muh stars', and 'muh miracle of life and the universe', bullshit artistry.

People who love popsci and think it's oh-so-important just look at the floating, empty gazing, gussied-up BS being spewed everywhere and think 'this is the only possible way children can be attracted to doing science', and 'this is the only possible way to disseminate scientific knowledge to the general population'.

It's fucking disgusting.

I don't mind Sagan so much but Brian Cox's face makes me physically ill.

Is pop sci bad because it creates and attracts people like pseudo-intellectuals neck beards that cant think for themselves and eat up everything others say?

I'm confused why /sci/ hates pop sci
