mmm I would say it requires a little bit more experience, goursat's proof of cauchy's theorem is pretty hard to follow, and many others proofs are not trivial at all in Complex Variable. I would say a FRESHMAN with one semester of calculus is not mature enough to understand the subject very well. At least that's what I think. It's not an easy subject.

You don't really need to know or understand the proof. In fact, with longer proofs like Cauchy's theorem I think even people who are more into the field just have an outline in their head and couldn't necessarily recreate it. And you can do a lot of complex analysis if you just take Cauchy's theorem for granted.

All you really need is to understand is line integration in the complex plain.
