Can high dose niacin actually alleviate depression?

>> No.5824900

No. No material substance can alleviate depression, it can only masquerade it until it surfaces again. Start meditating daily if you truly wish to get rid of depression.

>Maybe so. But they don't get rid of it. Depression is rooted in your mind and you need to use the mind to fight the mind.

That's exactly what he is saying. A different perspective is being provided and you're able to use it to fight your depression.

If "different perspective" means chemical dependency then I'd stay away from it. What good is a cure if you need to keep taking it?

No, you stop taking it when you know you're out of it.

Anyway I think I get your point, it's just that I never saw these things take a turn for the good immediately. Instead it takes years of dependency and even then the depression is simply masked. Many triggers can cause it to resurface. Why mess with your brain chemistry when you can simply take up healthy habits like meditation? It really does work. I'm a living example.

No, it is the exact opposite. It is training your mind to be free of thoughts in order to reach emotional tranquillity. It may sound simple but it is in fact very hard. This is why you need to train and acquire discipline.

You are very quick to make conclusions and you're being judgemental. I am simply saying that meditation really does work and those that don't practise it don't really know what they're missing out on. People are depressed because internally, they aren't at rest. Meditation is simply a way to acquire emotional balance. Why I'm suggesting it instead of drugs is, because it is healthier and in my opinion, more powerful.

There have been numerous studies made on the benefits of meditation. I suggest you go and look them up because the results are extraordinarily positive.

Even though meditation is often correlated with spirituality, it is just a practise in mindfulness, there's no spiritual component to it other than that which you yourself attach to it.

It's funny how angry people get for no reason. See, this is why you should meditate.

For the record, I'm a neurologist. I have so many degrees I can't count them on the fingers of my hand, and, well, I also meditate frequently. Weird huh? See it's because for me, it works wonders. If I wasn't meditating frequently, I would be depressed as well. And that's why I keep suggesting other people try it as well. Even if It can't hurt, can it?

And the reason I'm leaving is because you're acting childishly and by doing so you're wasting my time and draining my energy.

The burden of proof is on you. I don't have to disprove anything. It's you who has to define his terms and to provide evidence. So far you did neither. As a scientist I'll have to apply Hitchens' razor.

Seriously, fags. Why are y'all so uptight? Isn't science all about experience and research?

A study done by Yale, Harvard, Massachusetts General Hospital have shown that meditation increases gray matter in specific regions of the brain and may slow the deterioration of the brain as a part of the natural aging process.
The experiment included 20 individuals with intensive Buddhist "insight meditation" training and 15 who did not meditate. The brain scan revealed that those who meditated have an increased thickness of gray matter in parts of the brain that are responsible for attention and processing sensory input. Some of the participants meditated for 40 minutes a day while others had been doing it for years. The results showed that the change in brain thickness depended upon the amount of time spent in meditation. The increase in thickness ranged between .004 and .008inches (0.1016mm – 0.2032mm).[25][26]
