hi /sci/entists.
im in my second year of a mathematics/cs dual major with intentions on going on to do grad work. anybody else go with this academic route? what kind of jobs should i expect to be available to me?

Awww, the asshole of STEM. .
But like mopping floors and burger flipping I guess somebody's got to do it.

SE, first year here.
In my last internship, i had to automate the testing of software.
it was boring

SE sounds boring in general. What made you decide that?

well I like CS, but I also like to make software.
I feel like CS is more about studying the tool (programming languages and logic) than using it.

one of the class i'm taking right now is based on this book, which i find very good :

this is SE

I was CS, but switched to computational physics and couldn't be happier. I always enjoyed the math more than a pure programmer should, and needed to find a way to bring the interests together in a more concrete way.

That said, I always love learning about new algorithms. Seeing all the clever ways people solve some of the most subtle problems can be very impressive.

I've been involved in CUDA/OpenCL recently and loving it. A current project I'm working on simultaneously issues hundreds of thousands of threads, and that is bad ass.

SE here, good software design and architecture are what impresses me. The details of an algorithm is nice, but using it at the right place is even better.

How would I go about getting into AI? I'm assuming Ph.D but with what kinds of specializations or backgrounds?

>> No.5814414

What type of AI?

Honestly you probably want to learn a lot of math/statistics.

>> No.5814442

>>5814406
Sounds like you don't know enough to ask the right questions. (no offense)

In very simple, broad terms there are two types of AI. Strong and weak. Strong AI attempts to use logical formalism to create a machine in the likeness of the human mind. Weak AI aims to solve problems, and usually uses probabilistic inference to do it. Strong AI is "dead" while weak is the up and comer. Weak AI load balances the power grid, flies drones, powers self driving cars, automatically designs new CPU designs, etc.

You can get into those things through a lot of different ways as an undergrad. Udacity has a baby's first AI class, and Coursera has an excellent machine learning class. (teaching a computer to, say, recognize faces on a webcam stream may be what you consider AI, but it is usually branded as a "machine learning" problem)

Learning to make a neural network or genetic algorithm (simulated annealing/divergent evolution) isn't hard and makes a nice transition into the fundamentals, and helps purge you of a lot of misconceptions.

Controls theory, pathfinding, Bayesian inference, signal processing/filtering, Monte Carlo methods, parallel programming, image processing, computer vision, and rigorous mathematical statistics/probability all overlap with what most people call AI. Bringing them all together is what makes it special. Of course this should all be built on a firm foundation of data structures/algorithms/algorithm analysis.

Unless you were talking about video game AI. Totally different, but still an interesting topic.

two friends with very comparable capabilities i know from the same uni got two different internships. the CS guy is getting paid $30,000 to work in san francisco (with living accommodations provided). the physicist is working in a lab for $7.40/hr. stay mad, /sci/

actually, that's a valid question. allow me to explain.

the CS guy ('arnie') changed a lot after getting to college. arnie stopped using crazy linux distros and bought a mac since 'all the startups use them'. arnie stopped wearing his sister's glasses and t-shirts and started wearing north face jackets and horn-rimmeds because he felt he had to 'play the game'.

meanwhile the physicist (anthony) has hardly changed at all in college and is well aware of the money he could be making with his talent in engineering or another science. but anthony has stuck with physics because he lives and breathes it.

the cs guy plans to get his degree and go off working on startups and such, the physicist plans to go to grad school for either math or physics. being honest with myself i feel anthony the physicist is having more fun, but at present neither anthony nor arnie is feeling one major outcome of his career choices: income. a few years out anthony may feel that he was too quick to dismiss money as a concern, but maybe not. a few years out arnie may feel that ironing out his quirks to improve his image was necessary to bring him his present prosperity, but maybe not.

but back to my original point: if STEM must have a bastard child, it is certainly not CS. CS is a respectable field. perhaps we could heap our insecurities on something like organismal biology instead?
