No. First of all telecommunication itself is not science but technology. Of course the physical basis of said technology can be explained by science and anyone accepting the scientific method would agree. I am studying an MSc in a Physics related course, and I read sci-fi books all the time because I love the thrill and imagination, on top of reading the related journal articles all the time.
