I know you guys hate biology here, but how scientifically valid is the concept of "race"?

Is it just a social construct? Is there truth behind it?

Please. Don't.

>> No.5787990

The only distinction in "race" in human is melanin.

Races like White, Black and Asian are social constructs, but classifications like Caucasoid, Negroid and Mongoloid are actual racial terms used through academic literature.

>> No.5788007

>>5788000
No... because race is a sociological classification, therefore not biology.

>> No.5788015

>>5788006
The two are basically the same thing.

>Caucasoid, Negroid and Mongoloid are actual racial terms used through academic literature.
Maybe in 1900. That said, the fact that the particular way we break humans up into races has an element of arbitrariness shouldn't be taken to mean race doesn't exist, any more than the fact that the division between green and blue is arbitrary would mean color doesn't exist.

>> No.5788023

"Race" makes sense only with humans and is great because it let's us call people different groups without having to designate it a separate species, which it isn't.

Most of that shit is based on ethnicity and culture anyway, which can be independent of race.

Determining the racial affinity of an unknown individual from dentition for identification is indeed a difficult endeavour. However, there are certain dental characteristics which are predominant in certain racial groups and these contribute important indicators in the identification process. Inherited dental characteristics are modified by prenatal and postnatal environmental and nutritional conditions. They can also become less discernible due to admixture of the various races.

Human mitochondrial DNAs (mtDNAs) from 153 independent samples encompassing seven Asian populations were surveyed for sequence variation using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), restriction endonuclease analysis and oligonucleotide hybridization. All Asian populations were found to share two ancient AluI/DdeI polymorphisms at nps 10394 and 10397 and to be genetically similar indicating that they share a common ancestry. The greatest mtDNA diversity and the highest frequency of mtDNAs with HpaI/HincII morph 1 were observed in the Vietnamese suggesting a Southern Mongoloid origin of Asians. Remnants of the founding populations of Papua New Guinea (PNG) were found in Malaysia, and a marked frequency cline for the COII/tRNA(Lys) intergenic deletion was observed along coastal Asia. Phylogenetic analysis indicates that both insertion and deletion mutations in the COII/tRNA(Lys) region have occurred more than once.

The traits — thicker hair shafts, more sweat glands, characteristically identified teeth and smaller breasts — are the result of a gene mutation that occurred about 35,000 years ago, the researchers have concluded.

>social construct
All categories are constructed
Race isn't exactly 100% discrete, but some systems of categorisation of race work very well, like microsatellite marker clustering, which correlates near perfectly with self-identified race

Scientists who study race don't use caucasoid, negroid and mongoloid much anymore
>caucasoid
because the etymology is based on false premises, and because caucasians are a group in and of themselves, distinct from so called "caucasoids"
>negroid
because muh feelings
>mongoloid
because back in the 18th century, this referred to a very large group of people, pretty much everyone from East Asia to the Americas

Scientists who study race now seem to use more specific categories now
