Additionally, that's just his teaching salary. Public speakers get paid assloads for every speech they give.

no it was 'starting' and 'any job I want' and the built in assumption that these apply to everyone holding a PhD in math - as opposed to Tao the individual - that were bs

and don't forget grant money. That can easily be +50k

with just a smidgeon of ambition any PhD holder in mathematics can easily make 300K

Every math Phd is a Terance Tao but not every Terance Tao is a math Phd.

So you're a lot better off getting a math PhD than changing your name to Terance Tao.

I know a math PhD who only makes 115k starting. She's the laughing stock of the university. Seriously she sould be making three times that amount.

>> No.5779688

if this is a picture of him, I disrespect him because he dresses like shit.

Why do people envy lawyers or doctors instead of scientists?

Because this.

Who gives a fuck what you dress like. You could come to lecture naked if it were more acceptable. All most people care about is what is inside your fecking brain, broseph.

If fashion is what you're concerned about...maybe you should head on over to /fit/

I once bought a business and spent two years working my ass off to grow it to the point that it didn't need me anymore. Then I retired.

first thing I did is grew a goatee and ponytail. then I started wearning fruit of the loom t-shirts and holey wrangler jeans all the time. Untucked.

ten years into my early retirement I'm considering facial tattoos.

I'm a millionaire, I don't answer to anyone about my appearance.

Fuck Gucci and Armani and Lamborghini and any other Veblen goods middle class people buy to appear wealthy. I can afford to look like shit when I want, where I want.

yeah... judging that someone dresses like shit based on what looks like a fairly candid shot of them in which you can only see their shirt is pretty silly. But eh, viewing things objectively isn't for everyone (just much more common amongst scientists I guess).

and this is why most of /sci/ is single.

I don't particularily care about fashion, I care about being classy.
You've clearly never wore something nice and felt good with it. My wife always likes it when I dress up, and I understand why.
I'm just saying he could use a suit, you get more respect than your usual maths profs who wear the same clothes 6 days in a row even though they're really good at teaching

you get more respect in your world in a suit.

we're saying, welcome to our world where your suit says you're an overcompensating idiot or perhaps an eccentric anachronism.

Way to rock assumptions right and left. I love wearing suits when its expected. I always feel good about how I look in a suit. However, I'm not just going to go around places dressing up where its not expected. This shows too much focus on appearance and a fundamental lack of appreciation for the fact that visual impressions are important but nowhere near as important as the conversation that follows a first impression. At least to most of us here.

Personally, I can't help but pay a little attention to my own appearance. Back when I was a kid I gave 0 fucks but since then I've toned down on the oversized shirts n cargo pants and have at least payed attention when picking out clothes in the morning. It comes in varying degrees, but I think its respectable to give 0 fucks about appearance (that being said, I still really dislike some people who's first impressions really put me off, but its usually because talking to them after that first impression was shitty as well).

I'm not single. And I'm gay.

So much for that 'hypothesis' of yours. I dress nicely when I need to. Class isn't one of those situations.

because doctors and even lawyers add value to society. doctors can save your life or cure your illnesses. lawyers can save your ass in a lawsuit or provide you monetary compensation for an injustice. math phds spend their lives scribbling on scratch paper and publishing in journals that nobody without autism reads or cares about.

Every Phd not named Terance Tao is a Terance Tao derivative of Terance Tao.

Math PhD's are pod people.
