Why does academia like to give long tests crammed into an hour and 10 minutes

>> No.5768852

Why don't you like what you do?

If you have the knowledge incrustated into your brain, then the test should be quick to be solved.

Why can't you study the material and do well on the tests proving you know the material and are not retarded?

No.

2 explanations

1) Theyre sadists and just enjoy watching you suffer

2) They forget what its like to be a student and honestly dont know how to teach that well

Because it is the best way to test your understand of the material.

they want you to know the material to the point where you don't have to think about the answer when writing it down.

Exactly. It's not about how much you learned and can create stuff. It's just conditioning you to be a calculus machine, that's what technical school is all about.

why do we fucking allow this? it seems like math education is stuck at the 1930s level "hurr whats a calculator, whats wolfram alpha?"

What? My tests last between 2 and 4 hours depending on the subject.
You can't do shit in 1 hour.

My tests last between 4-5 hours. I completely understand why though. I actually need that time to answer the questions (Phd Physics). Sometime I even need more time.

I don't see anything with this. It is the best way to determine if a student knows the material well.

You need to stop sweating the small stuff kid.

When I took my bachelor, they were all between 4 and 8 hours.

All education is stuck in the pre internet era, not only the issue of memorization but also the teaching methods in general.

I often read, that its better in scandinavia, but in most other parts its memorization, quick solving of a mass of equations, conditioning etc.

No room for real problem solving and creativity.

Projects involving a deep knowledge of the subject and one's own interpretation of it are far better but more difficult to grade, hence you're really just working for the teacher's wellbeing and not your own
