Something I've been wondering /sci/

In quantum mechanics you only ever hear about the act of measuring some property, but is it possible to do a partial observation?

For example, instead of "measuring it's position" can you check to see if the particle is in a certain region?

Obviously if it is there then the outcome is the same, but what happens to the state of the particle of it is found to NOT be in that region?
I would imagine that all other probabilities would increase the more you rule out certain possibilities.

Or is it just not possible? Although I can't imagine why it wouldn't be.

Are you implying that my question is at all pseudo science?

Just wondering if that is actually what you think...

Have you even taken a quantum mechanics class?

Yes, this is possible, we do this all the time.

Do you guys not understand the question or what?

Let me ask a similar question then:

say we had a tripple slit experiment. The particle would have a state like:
<div class="math">|\psi\rangle =\frac{1}{\sqrt{3}}|1\rangle +\frac{1}{\sqrt{3}}|2\rangle +\frac{1}{\sqrt{3}}|3\rangle</div>

now if a detector were at slit 3, for example, and it does not detect a particle then unlike the double slit experiment this cannot possible cause the particle to have a single eigenstate now because there are still two possibilities:
<div class="math">|\psi\rangle =\frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}|1\rangle +\frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}|2\rangle</div>
The above is what I think would happen, but because I've never seen anything like this treated in any QM books I can't say for sure.

That's why I'm asking.

Quantum mechanics (QM – also known as quantum physics, or quantum theory) is a branch of physics which deals with physical phenomena at microscopic scales, where the action is on the order of the Planck constant. Quantum mechanics departs from classical mechanics primarily at the quantum realm of atomic and subatomic length scales. Quantum mechanics provides a mathematical description of much of the dual particle-like and wave-like behavior and interactions of energy and matter.

The answer is yes, it's possible. Pretty much any measurement is going to be a partial measurement.

>> No.5764263

Yeah, I think I read a paper about how the act of measuring the particle can be subtle enough that it does not push it out of a domain of stability and the particle returns to the state in which it was measured.
