Are there any mathematicians here?
I always wondered what exactly mathematicians actually do...

Is it just making models of real life/imaginary situations?
Describing the world is used but i would really like to know any specifics.

they make 300k starting xDDD fuken epik

They do shit jobs like accounting, and the very small percent tries their chance at stock market yet they suck at it.

Does such a thing as a "shitty mathematician" who professionally works in math exist?

I always assumed in order to become a legitimate mathematician you had to be you know, great at math.

that's not very glamorous.

They cant work as an accountant unless they take an accounting degree and become a certified public accountant.

They can work as accounts clerks, but that is a ridiculous proposition.

They will have nothing to do with accounting.

Within academia, they do mathematics.

I don't know why laymen seem to share this illusion that mathematics is "done"; that there is nothing left to prove. That's entirely absurd.

Outside of academia, there is the stockmarket, there is data analysis, there is algorithmics: basically anything someone with a strong quantitative background does.

Jajajajajaaj, why do people keep thinking this?

You can graduate without knowing shit, when i was studying mech engineering, there was this group of 5 people that were retarded as hell, but they always cheated, and got good grades, when we got to 5 semester, and our teachers started to put weird problems, that you couldnt find anywhere, they started to fail, and by the time i was in 7 semester, they were almost all already out of college.
But of them graduated, and other 2, changed major to material engineering, and graduated, with the same method, they dont know shit, but they have their degrees.
Same thing in math or other degrees, im not saying all math majors are shit, but, you indeed can have a math degree and suck at everything.

i have a bachelors in math and i'm applying for $12/hour factory jobs. does that count as 'industry?'

don't major in math. is a fucking waste of time.

i just graduated with a b.s. in mathematics.

the b.s. stands for bull shit

What did you expect? Graduate school is not hard to get into, and they fund you. Spend the couple extra years to get a real degree, and do something marketable this time.

Engineers employ mathematicians to do the boring maths they can't/wont do themselves

do you idiots just make shit up without even thinking? how many 'by hand' calculations do you think engineers do in the real world? how much analysis do you think engineers do that CAN'T be solved by software packages? jesus fucking christ, you kids. the real world is going to fuck you up the asshole.

I'm curious of the good mathematicians, if they can work out math, they can surely work anything else, I mean, all they do is solve problems. If they're not going to grad school, why not go to some other field and make some money?
