Alright /sci/, got a question regarding TSE's or prion diseases.

Kuru affects humans who eat the brain of others, is this true for all cases? Is it only the brain in this case via human/human consumption?

For cases of bovine spongiform it essentially can be transmitted through any meat cosumption. Why it like this for the bovine prion disease? I assume it's a mutated protein for the cows, and it somehow get's passed the CNS, but for Kuru, if it's only transmitted through eating the CNS, why doesn't it act like bovine encepholopathy, or vise versa

Prions are not a mutated protein!

It's a protein that you normally have in your cells

In your cells, it's normally in a non-harmful form

In the sick cows, the protein is folded differently. It's not a mutation, the amino acid sequence is the same. Just the 3d folding structure is different.

When the bad form comes into contact with the good one, it causes the good form to spontaneously misfold into the bad one

The bad folded form of the prion has specific structure (4 beta sheets instead of the normal 2 alpha helices due to different folding)

Because there are 4 beta sheets, they can spontaneously stack into long rods

When it's stacked up like that, it's insoluble and extremely difficult to digest so it precipitates into amyloid plaques which is what makes the spongy holes

So basically all you need is a tiny bit of malformed prion protein to fuck your shit up
