There are thousands of them - wack-ass theorists with their own off-beat, untestable theories as to the basic nature of the universe.

Some of these theories happen to be, although both wrong and untestable, pretty interesting through sheer strangeness - or sometimes hilariousness. This is the thread for posting particularly choice examples.

Behold, Gyre Theory. A 105-page monstrosity, claiming to explain literally everything with spirals.

Abstract:"Life is an inordinately complex unsolved puzzle. Despite significant theoretical progress, experimental anomalies, paradoxes, and enigmas have revealed paradigmatic limitations. Thus, the advancement of scientific understanding requires new models that resolve fundamental problems. Here, I present a theoretical framework that economically fits evidence accumulated from examinations of life. This theory is based upon a straightforward and non-mathematical core model and proposes unique yet empirically consistent explanations for major phenomena including, but not limited to, quantum gravity, phase transitions of water, why living systems are predominantly CHNOPS (carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and sulfur), homochirality of sugars and amino acids, homeoviscous adaptation, triplet code, and DNA mutations. The theoretical framework unifies the macrocosmic and microcosmic realms, validates predicted laws of nature, and solves the puzzle of the origin and evolution of cellular life in the universe."

The kicker? This thing managed to get published in a legit scientific journal. It was hilarious.

Down in the bottom right corner he actually proposes an experiment. I have to give him credit for that. I almost never see crank physics actually propose experiments.

Check this out: A man who claims to have irrefutably proved that pi = 3.125, exactly.

http://correctpi.com/

And this guy, who has proved that gravity is not a force of attraction of masses- it's a force by which hot things attract other hot things.

And then there's this guy, who is possibly the most entertaining of the whole lot.

http://milesmathis.com/index.html

Notable "accomplishments":

>Demonstrated that every mathematician since (and including) Euclid was wrong;
>Corrected the problems with relativity;
>Turned relativity into a unification theory by proving that magnetism is part of the relativistic gravitational field;
>Shown that all of gravitational/orbital dynamics is completely, utterly wrong; and, last but not least:
>proved that the one true correct value of is exactly 4.

And here's the best part: His proof of pi=4 involves proving that PI IS NOT DIMENSIONLESS. And the reason pi is not dimensionless? Because the circumference of a circle is not a distance.

"Now let us return to the geometric circle. All the equations of geometry are created by assuming that time is not a factor. You can’t really just ignore time, so what the geometry does is assume that all underlying time intervals are equal. What does that mean, specifically? Well, it must mean that all the lines are understood to have been drawn with the same velocity. We can ignore the velocity since we define it as equivalent. What does that mean?

It means that the radius is a velocity itself."

Oh lordy.

It's almost too easy. Besides, it's all the same shit. Mad Physics, Mad Biology, and occasionally the odd bit of Mad Math and Mad Computer Science are the places where the really interesting crankery comes up, because no two theories are the same. They're like special, ridiculous snowflakes. Of mad science.

Joy Christian and his alleged disproof of Bell's theorem is a great example of a different class of crackpot -- the kind that instead of railing against the evils of mathematics and preaching that physics should conform to common sense, abuses the fuck out of the math and fundamentally doesn't understand what is physically going on.
