Why do mirrors reflect left and right but not up and down?

>> No.5628720

You're thinking about it the wrong way, instead of thinking the mirror reflects it left to right imagine that it flips you inside out ... Does that make sense?

Mirrors ain't flat. Look at a spoon on the outside, you're flipped one way, look at a spoon on the inside and you're flipped another.

Top of image shows top of object.
Bottom of image shows bottom of object.
Left of image shows left of object.
Right of image shows right of object.

Seems to work the same, bro.

>> No.5628766

In a mirror the image is switched front to back, not left right. That's why your mirror image still points right when you do.

Someone has read the Feynman books...

Also, if serious, mirrors don't "invert" reflections or something. They are a direct trace of every point of the object they can "see" to a surface, if this makes any sense.

But what you are calling the "left of image" is actually the right, from the perspective of the mirror.
