there is no missing dollar, 97 went for the shirt, 1 for the protag, one for the mother, and one for the dad. This entire question is just a test to see how easily you accept a question's -no matter how illogical- premise.

Well that's logic, but its the arithmetic that counts right? Or is this just retarded?

>> No.5609959

You shouldn't re-add your dollar at the end. You're subtracting the 2, getting 49 due to 98/2. The one dollar doesn't go back ontop of the total but rather is taken from it.

>> No.5609963

lol, the [$97] variable is irrelevant to the implied problem at the end.

You owe $100. You got back $3. You paid back $2. You now owe $98. There is no missing dollar besides the $1 you pocketed.

This puzzle is a rather clever way of demonstrating the problems that are caused by the way most grade-school math textbooks teach the subject.

>> No.5609966 [DELETED]

>>5609963
Son of a bitch, I meant "You now owe $99."

>> No.5609970

97 + 1 - 49 - 49 = 0

$97, value of the shirt
$1, the dollar you currently possess
$49, debt to mom
$49, debt to dad

Assets minus liabilities. The arithmetic works out.

>>5609951
>but its the arithmetic that counts right?
you're adding debts to real money. plus they have opposite signs. it doesn't work arithmetically or logically.

>> No.5609984

At the end of the transaction, mom and dad lost $49. You earned $1. The store earned $97.

All the money is accounted for, Adding 49 + 49 + 1 doesn't mean anything. It makes as much sense as adding 49 + 1 + 97.

mom - 50, me +50
dad - 50, me +50
me -97, store +97
me -1, mom +1
me -1, dad +1

mom -50 +1 = -49
dad -50 + 1 = -49
me +50 +50 -97 -1 -1 = 1
store + 97 = 97

-49 -49 = 1 + 97

>> No.5610018

>>5609842
Let's see. So you wasted 97 dollars and now you owe 50 to each of your parents, You got 3 dollars left. Now you return 1.50 to your father and 1.50 to your mom. Great, now you owe them 48.50 to each.

I don't see the problem.

welcome to accounting?

>> No.5610044

This is actually a problem I can assist with!

Pre-payment

Assets:

Shirt: 97
Dollar: 3

100

Liabilities -

Mom - 50
Dad 50

100

Post-payment

Assets:

Shirt 97
Cash 1

Liabilities

Accounts payable - Mom 49
Accounts payable - Dad 49

98

It balances, there is no missing dollar. The reason the second number decreases is the discharge of liabilities and assets.

>> No.5610056

The last line is incorrect. It should read like this:

-$98 + $1 = -$97
debts + cash-on-hand = cost of the shirt you still owe

>> No.5610067

The last equation is wrong:
1) Formally, it says 49+49=99. Learn to write equations you retard.
2)On the actual question: it doesn't make any sense to add +1$ at the 98$. The 98$ owed already account for the 1$ you kept for yourself, so you are adding 1$ twice. To get the total money, it's just:
98$ owed + 2$ returned = 100
Oh wow who cares.

>Anyway, I havn't seen any agreement on a single solution though.

There cannot be a single solution,
because the problem is nothing but a confusion of words.

There is no problem in it; it just confuses debt with asset, and implies there is a problem when adding pieces of both.

It's not even remotely new -- it's been a comedy bit since the 40s!

$49
$49
That is the person's debt
That takes $2 of the total debt he owes, which is $100.
The £1 he keeps is money which could go to paying off his debt, which would then make one debt be $48.
So then we have,
$48 + $49

The money he has makes his debts get lower, so to add his debts to his money owned obviously won't provide $100, because he has already lowered that value of his debts with the $2 change.

By doing $49 + $49 + $1 he is only finding how much money he is yet to pay back, which is lower than the price of the shirt because he has already payed the debt back slightly. It is $99 instead of $98 because he is adding the $1, which has potential to lower the debt to $97, which should be the true value.

Assets minus liabilities anon. You pocketed the dollar.

Allow me to quickly balance this for you:
Asset: Liability.
1 Dollar. 49+49
97 dollar shirt

97 + 1 - 49 - 49 = 0

It's balanced.

The subtle error is when the $1 that you kept is added to the final equation. Essentially it's a wrong unit, because it's not a dollar to be owed to the parents. Since you kept the dollar it's a dollar that you still owe to the parents. Nevermind, I'm not explaining this shit, but basically it's just faulty reasoning/math about what is owed.
