What do you guys pick as electives for your STEM degrees?

I have 12 CP's to put towards electives this year, and I don't know what I want to do.

Do they have to be STEM courses outside of your field?

If not and you are a dork take foreign language. I doubled in math/French and enjoyed both.

Nope. Can be literally any 1000 level course in the entire university.

I was thinking about picking up arabic or spanish. French would be good too but I'm already partially fluent in it so it wouldn't be needed too much.

I had a 1.5 semesters of an intense writing course on the "great books" list.

Another 1.5 semesters of a foreign language -- the only way passing out of it was writing essay exams and an interview with a native speaker

I also had a 2 semester requirements of courses not-related to my major:

Add on that art, history, and ethnic studies

Mind you, these are all general education REQUIREMENTS to graduate

and you have the reason why I'm taking 5 years for a bachelor's degree

also when i said 2 semester i meant 4...

I'm a physics major, but I've already earned math and CS minor. I also have taken courses in economics and cognitive science. With any luck, I'll earn an econ minor before I graduate as well.

I used my electives in Differential Calc II (extremely hard would not do again), and over-credits into a slavic language.

From all angles it was totally worth, since a lot of the electives are "that's cool and all but not really useful" tier for after-college work.

I would advice any engineering major to go into language or arts. It balances you out and you get to ">" about the plebs when you're there.

Yes you can. First two classes for a Latin alphabet language should be enough to teach you everything except filling in your vocabulary and you can do that on your own.

As a math major, I refuse to take more than two math classes per semester. Any more, and what I learn in one ends up taking the place of something I didn't learn well in another.

I usually just take electives in whatever interests me. I'm currently taking an elective on the sociology of contemporary East Asia (incredibly interesting, especially through the eyes of a westerner), metaphysics, and microeconomics.

I had a choice between two math courses, but I decided to take both. I plan on taking psychology for a LA requirement, but sociology and econ are popular too. Also, as long as they don't have to be liberal arts or humanities, just take classes from another major you were considering. For example, biochem here, but I plan on taking inorganic and quantum for fun

Kind of sucks, I really wanted to take language classes for fun but can't fit it in due to time and how many damn classes this BS requires.

>> No.5594344

>>5594315
If you're taking language, it's best learn by yourself. In my experience, at least. What I learned in three years of high school Spanish, you could easily teach yourself in less than a month. Maybe two weeks. I swear, none of those people would even be able to hold a conversation with a native toddler about where to find a toilet.

It kind of reminds me of how it took months to get to conditional statements in my Programming I class, or how I completed the entirety (three months) of my Web Design coursework in one night.

>> No.5594399

>>5594344

I'd do a tougher language like Latin, Arabic, or Chinese that would benefit more from having a class. It's still the fact that I don't have time to devote to get anywhere far in it.
