TL;DR
Egg drop in my senior year physics class. Probably going to do a cone made out of 1-2 pieces of paper, with the third ripped up inside for cushioning, with the egg ontop of the shredded paper. Seems like it will work. Girls in my class have already destroyed ~10 eggs because they really want to make this butterfly hot air-balloon design. It's retarded.

Anyway, just wanted Sci's thoughts. If someone posts a better idea, or an idea that is crazy enough to work, i'll do it and post pics later.

Paper rotating parachute

Similar to this design, but built to rotate.

yeah I agree. I guess it's so we have more of a challenge, or think harder or something. Also, I'll try to answer some questions now, if any, becuase I need to go somewhere in ~10 mins.

how accurate will the drop be?

>> No.5538642

Accurate?
We are just standing on our lab tables, holding our contraption near the ceiling, and dropping it straight down to the ground. No real accuracy problem lol.

>> No.5538645

>>5538620
That's actually clever. Only problem is, the egg is quite heavy, so I would need to make a big ass wing with my 3 sheets of paper.

>> No.5538646

1. Three origami boxes taped together with the egg taped on top, using the extra paper (origami boxes use square sheets) as streamers to make sure the boxes land first.

2. a sharp cone pointing down, with the egg at the base, hanging from a parachute cone.

i want to try the box thing. Now I need to figure out how to make an origami box lol.

#1 is a pretty neat idea. what would be a good way to increase the drag the streamers apply?

>> No.5538674

>>5538669
Only thing I think would work would be cutting many little frays in each streamer to make it much less aerodynamic, and cause more drag.
Anyway I'll be back later guys, thanks for the ideas!

what about folding little tetrahedrons, or would that be too hard to stick together?

also, don't forget the tape. you can use the excess tape on the streamers or to streangthen the origami boxes/

put the egg inside of a pillow. If thats too faggy for you make a glider esque vertical stabilized 4 wing egg aircraft.. in an "(H)" shape or just incorporate it in the innards of your cone...cylinder... cone is bad for aerodynamics...unless you want to create an airpocket of instability.

Man i'm going to need to make some blueprints but I can MAYBE see this working, i'll consider it.
Man, i'm eager to see my classmate's faces when I come in with this elaborate and precise thing while they all chuck their eggs into oblivion.

>> No.5539183

Don't get fancy with egg drops.
Just do what UPS does. Shred paper until it's you can get a dense amount. Place egg in middle.

>> No.5539184

Build a cylinder, FILL it with black powder, and cover both sides. Make some kind of ignition source. Cradle the egg on top with the third piece of paper, and put on top of the cylinder FILLED with black powder. Have fishing line (so your teacher can't see it) attached and tied through a hole in the bottom piece of paper covering the cylinder. Pull and then ignite. This will give it an unknown force up, and gravity pulling it down. Hope this helps.

When I did this at my school, the winning container was literally just crumpled up paper. I don't know how much they used, so it might not be a good strategy for you OP, depending on how well just 3 sheets can protect the egg.

You know, so that all the vertical K.E. gets converted to horizontal upon impact and it just rolls down the hall?

It would have to be nearly perfectly vertical at one side, and gently slope down to almost perfectly horizontal at the other. I don't see why it wouldn't work, but then again, I can only use 3 sheets of paper and 1.5 feet of tape.
Clever idea though, thanks.
