I recently had a doctor (another eurofag) quote a figure on a medical bill as "3000,00" and I nearly shat myself thinking it was three hundred thousand.

I adapt my notation to the language I'm writing in. If I write a scientific paper, clearly I'll use the decimal point, rather than a comma.
Calculators here are not adapted, so they almost always use a dot. However, some software (on phones or computers) is 'smart' and requires a comma. Which, in turn, is not available on the numpad of these devices.

You just gave the reason TO use a period. Period separates the hard end of whole number and faction, comma just acts as a loose separator of millions, billions, trillions to quick gauge the size of the number for the reader. Spaces should show the end and start of different numbers in a sequence.
