I'm about to read this book.
I'm an A-Level further mathematician, not a scientist, but it interests me.
Are there some key concepts or ideas that I need to know before reading this?

Dude, we need to know what level this guy's on so we don't drop a huge pile of stuff he doesn't know a damned thing about on him.

Also, Hamiltonian and Lagrangian mechanics would be a pretty good place to start, from what little I know of string theory (3rd year undergrad in pure maths, dabbled in some solitons last term). Specifically applied to waves, since waves are pretty much the way things go down in string theory afaik.

You need more than A-level further maths to do string tehroy

I'll look into them, thank you.

I'm not looking to 'do string tehroy', It just interests me, so I'm reading into it. The book is relatively accessible too.

book is pop science, any idiot can read it

if you want to do some real extra curricular physics, teach yourself special relativity or some shit. easy for A level student

The education level someone has is pretty important information with these kinds of things though isn't it...
