Moving charge creates a magnetic field. This includes current moving through a wire, and also includes the electrons spinning around an atom. In magnetic substances like iron, the electrons happen to be spinning all in the same direction, which creates a single magnetic field that goes through it.

This also explains why you can create a temporary magnet by running a current through something. The electrons in the something will align with the current going through it, and when the current stops, for a time, they will still be spinning synchronously.

Maxwell's equations explain all of this phenomena, in 4 pretty simple formulas. The formulas are simple, but some of the phenomena are pretty counter intuitive initially.
