Hi /sci/.

I have a picture of a huge, 800x800 maze. When I view it in an image viewing program and start resizing the window, this starts to happen (see pic). What is this effect called and why does it happen? I know it's got something to do with rendering but I'm curious what exactly is going on. I had an idea that this effect might perhaps be turned into a noise generator of sorts.

Top left is how the should look like when sized down, the other versions are anomalies that appear when I resize the window about.

And this is the original picture containing the 800x800 maze:

(I can't post it here due to huge resolution).

It's call aliasing.

it's called Aliasing. mathematically, it comes out of Fourier theory and Fourier transforms. what is happening when you rescale the image is that the computer has to turn adjacent pixels into a single pixel, so it has to choose a gray scale value somehow based on the values of the individual pixels. it could average the shades of the individuals, for example. it is not random and there are many ways to do it.

you wouldn't really get random noise since it's pretty predictable (moire patterns)
these are generally an unwanted artifact but they're also kind of cool. i made a moire pattern generator in opengl along time ago
