See, math doctorates have a lot of book smarts but no actual real world intelligence. What company is going to pay a student right out of a Ph.D program anything remotely approaching, $300k? I work for a defense contractor doing R&D (where the big money is) and none of our Ph.D Engineers or Mathematicians make close to that...and they have a ton of post-doc and research publications and government clearances.

The people making the big money in our company are MBAs with Project Management backgrounds and a long track record of success.

I said that I know of NO Ph.D mathematicians that make $300k starting out...and I don't know of any that have established track records that do either. I do remember taking an econometrics class and after we got about half way through the text he said "Now you know enough to get a job making $60k a year...if you learn the rest you'll make about $20k less because no one pays the fucking eggheads because they don't know any better." Our PMs make great money, not because they are smart, but because while mathletes had their noses in books, they were out drinking bourbon, mixing it up with people and building their network. Instead of being good at math, it's better in the real world to be the guy that knows that guy that's good at math.

You're also in defense. The 300k starting is in finance. There are plenty of 6 figure jobs you can get with a PhD in math but outside of finance they are hard to find and extremely hard to get without working your way up. But a PhD in math is enough to qualify you for a quant job with 150k starting salary plus another 40-60% of that in bonus if you're good at it.
