>Got a serious question for you sci.

Why do you help others? What possible logic could exist behind helping others (in an altruistic sense) that are not related to you?

the benefits of participating in a modern society should be obvious. Aside from not having to farm or butcher or make a car or a computer or a television, there's the fact that you live about 50 years longer in a society.

societies don't allow people to participate without giving something back.

traditionally intellectuals give the most back to society while taking relatively little in return. If anything, scientists and engineers give far more to humanity than they probably should.

Because it's a good thing to do. Morality tends to be axiomatic like that.

Psych-evolutionarily, it's because it turns out that helping others makes them like you more and makes them tell of your generosity (in ancestrally small groups), which has such a drastic effect on tribal politics that the factor by which your offspring increases is greater than the odds of death of running into a blazing goddamn inferno.

Even not telling people about the good things you did is exceedingly clever: people are bound to find out about some good thing you did anonymously, and then they won't just know you secretly did something, they know that you might have done countless other good things they didn't find out about.

I thought it was pretty simple. I thought of this when I was 5 and rolled with it ever since then

do onto others as you have others do onto you

so if you help lots of people, then people will help you too!!!

Man, I hate individual-centered evolution theory so much because of constructs like this. The gene-centered theory is so much easier: Humans have traditionally lived in groups that have shared quite an amount of genes (i.e. that were related). If your average mate shared 20% of your genes, a behavior that uses 10% of your resources to help him save 50% of his is selected for.

I want the human race to persevere. Why? Because I believe that civilization is the universe's way of ensuring its own subjectification.

I am in no way an expert and my comment should not be taken as fact by anyone. But I read an article saying that because cooperation works better than killing everyone, people with cooperative genes would pass on their genetic info, thus people today are inclined to help others.
