Hi, I wish to do Computer Science at university and I wanted ot ask. At most schools, Is discrete maths the only maths you need to know?

>> No.5378960

Discrete mathematics and at least differential calculus.

Thank you bro.

I had to do all of Calc, Linear Algebra, and a Statistics course. And Discrete.

>> No.5380139

Plus graph theory and at least some more advanced group theory in algorithms

What the hell is 'differential' calculus?

>> No.5380970

>>5380960
calculus on something differentiable
Actually, "calculus" is something like a method, its semantics is distorted by ignorant people today

Sometimes discrete math and stat is all you need to know
And, I approve of the hot girl from Misfits

What the hell are you talking about?

>> No.5381244

>>5380990
Not the one you responded to, but calculus comes from latin word calculus, which means "a small stone used for counting", that's why we have Lambda calculus, Hilbert calculus, propositional calculus etc.

It's the branch of math that studies infinitesimal and analytical properties of functions. 'Differential' is because you can study how different valued quantities maps to something, and you study what the differences of those quantities make.

Thanks, bro.

You generally take calc 1-2 (3?), linear, and discrete. But in practice you only really need linear and discrete for your class work.

If you like computer math, numerical analysis is something you should look into. You can take it as a required elective.

What is "maths"? I've honestly never heard the term before I came to 4chan.

It's the British term for math, much like "flat" for apartment, "crisps" for chips and "rooty tooty point and shooty" for guns.

>> No.5384579

>>5384557
It's short for mathematics. A term that tooth-sucking limey british bastards like to use.

At NTNU we have disc math and three calculus classes

>> No.5386789

At U of T, you 're prerequisites include calculus 1-3, vector calculus, and some abstract algebra for numerical analysis, and linear algebra up to fields in addition to descrete maths basically.
