>I think a First class in the UK is equal to 4.0 GPA in the US
OK, but, supposing you had a First class would you put 4.0 or 2.0 on application forms? (Some companies that don't allow for other forms)

>hardly anyone gets a First really, the maximum you can get in my Uni is perhaps 75% if you show extreme amounts of external knowledge.
It's almost (slightly easier) like this at some of our unis with 75% being a "distinction" that ~5-10% of a class will achieve.

Basically this. Especially point 4. Do your reading early: as in, do it before the fucking class.

I'm in my third year of teaching full time, plus the courses I taught in grad school, and I say this to every group of students. There's a reason I spent hours making a detailed class-by-class outline of what we're covering on each day, and a reason why it says on the synopsis that you are expected to do your reading beforehand.

I'm not going to hold your hand through the entire course. I need to cover the shit that we need to cover, and there's a fucking lot of it. If you do your reading beforehand like a responsible adult, then I can answer your questions, in class, about the shit you're having difficulty with. Odds are that half the class has the same problems you do. But it's a waste of my time (and yours, when you spend an hour waiting outside my office hoping for help the day before your homework is due) for you to come to the lecture having no idea what it's about, try to learn there, and then have 50 of you come to my office over the next week asking about some point that I could have explained just once.

When we're given a study guide in class, I start studying the night before. I number each of the points off, and on a piece of paper I write down the relevant information (from the book and notes) onto the paper. After the entire study guide is complete, I go back through and read the notes. Then I go to bed. In the morning, I wake up and read through the notes as many times as I can until right before the exam.

If I have a long list to memorise, I try to create helpful mnemonic or way to remember it (usually I hate these, but for cramming they're great, just make sure they mean something to you. Sometimes they're even practically nonsensical). For example, if I was trying to remember Sternberg's triangle theory of love, and I needed to memorise the three parts of it (passion, intimacy, and commitment), I could take the first letters of those (PIC) and then remember that I have to "'PIC[k]'" my mate." It sounds silly, but as long as it's something you can remember on the test, it doesn't matter.

On a semi-related note, what kind of retarded children actually needed the mnemonic "My Very Earnest Mother . . ." to remember the planets? It's not like it was hard or anything.

If I think of any more tricks I use I'll post them.

You can't just change to PharmD, DDS, or PA on a whim because you can't get into med school. Those schools want to see evidence that you have good reasons for, say, wanting to become a pharmacist. That means having pharmacy experience, not medical experience. Furthermore, non-medical health schools are well aware that they're second choice for desperate failed pre-meds, and go to lengths to filter those applicants out (for example, dental schools will immediately reject you if they find out you took the MCAT).

A 3.55 GPA is a bit low for med school, but not terribly. You can still get in as long as the rest of your app is good enough. Get a lot of clinical and shadowing experience and a good MCAT score and you're set.

For non computational classes i do the assigned reading before it is covered in class, and before the exam i will spend 1-2 hours quickly skimming through online notes/book. This has worked for bio1&2, psychology, and a bunch of other gen eds. Even worked for programming, and classes with all free response exams. However, the people taking classes like these are honestly not at the same level as people in STEM classes, so I spend maybe 1/6 the time studying for these classes as i do for the STEM ones.
For computational classes i do the same as non computational, but i also do all of the assigned problems. The important part is to legitimately work problems with no outside help unless it has seriously taken you 30+ minutes for one problem to even formulate a plan. This method got me A's in calc 1-3, chem 1&2, organic chem 1, physics w/ calc 1-2, and a few other computational classes.
Still a sophomore so haven't taken crazy upper level classes yet, but this might help freshmen out.

oh dude how is it there? i'm thinking about transferring but im not from CA and not that crazy about paying double the price. maybe for grad? i'm a bio major and you guys must have crazy awesome research opportunities/programs

>> No.5357283

>>5357278
the bio at ubc is a very weak program for undergrad. clearly underfunded. they can't afford to have labs for the majority of their classes. they lack many different biology courses. for example i think they only have two or three undergrad genetics courses. can't speak about grad, probably a lot better.

What is the GPA useful for? To get into gradschools / get scholarships?
We don't have that grading over here, I'm not even in college quite yet (next year)

grad school, professional schools, scholarships, research and internship positions, jobs depending on the field

Welp, I see.
Is the GPA from college totally unrelated to the one from highschool?
The thing is I threw my highschool grades through the window because all I cared about was passing, hah.

what >>5357346 said. The higher your GPA, the better your chances of getting any of those things. If it's too low then you're locked out of future opportunities. If it's really low then colleges will actually kick you out.

Basically goes like this:
3.7 to 4.0 = gets you into any grad/professional program provided the rest of your application is up to snuff
3.6 = Still pretty good
3.5 = Lowest GPA you can have and still have a decent shot at good grad programs and professional schools
3.3 to 3.4 = low chance of getting into said programs. Will get you into low end grad programs.
3.0 = Minimum GPA for most grad/professional schools to even consider your application. Below this and they just toss it out without looking at the rest of it.
2.5 to 2.9 = Hope you didn't have any post-undergrad education plans, or apply for a job that cares about undergrad GPA
1.5 to 2.0 = typically this is where you'll get hit with academic probation by your college. If your GPA stays here for too long you run the risk of being expelled.
Below 1.5 = You're still here?

I'm very lazy and study very little.
Calculus I handed my butt to me this semester because I did barely any of the homework and I've never bothered to do any for maths before and got A's

studying is not hard, just hard to get motivated for. At least this is the case in my experience. The only classes I've done poorly in are the classes that I never opened the text for. Even the you can get a passing grade with minimal effort

>having to work a shit job while going to school

all these assholes who live on campus and get money from mommy and daddy piss me off. there is no reason anyone with that much free time should not have a 4.0

yes I mad

Not the guy you were responding to.

To be honest, that stigma is a hold-over from past days. This place has fallen off the "party school" rankings.
