Bike and motorcycle riding is a known cause of this especially if you don't sit properly on the seat but I don't think that there is enough riders to effect nationwide statistics.

And remember the great outcry over mobile phones causing brain tumors? That has been somewhat debunked but there was also a fear that somehow the little induction heating due to microwave cellphone radiation might affect sperm count. I don't know if that was also debunked though it fits well within the time frame of the aforementioned study.

My guess would be sex has decreased in frequency while masturbation has increased. Humans have lived in small tribes similar to 8th century northern villages for milennia, so it would be very evolutionarily suboptimal for the men not to have sex during the entire winter. While pornography is older than writing, only for about a century has it been capable of producing realistic imagery in motion. Masturbation is more talked about yes because we have moved on from 1950's prude-ness. But masturbation has not increased.
The number of betas not pro-creating i would say has increased due to how available masturbatory devices have become.

besides, if you are masturbating more, I would say sperm count would go up as your body thinks more and more sex is going on.

It's possible its a hormonal thing. As men repress their natural testosterone fueled activities, sperm count as a result goes down.
