To get a career in astrophysics or astronomy, would you be expected to have at least a masters, if not a PhD?

What kind of a career could someone attain in these fields? Does anyone here have one?

So you want to be a professor?

Could you be a bit more specific? I was on the verge of starting an astrophysics career, but chickened out due to the shitty job situation.

Never mentioned that I did.

The idea that you can only get a job as a professor is stupid in these fields is stupid, what's the point of learning/teaching these subjects if they can't be used in a practical field such as engineering.

Was about to start a similar thread.
I wanted to be a massage therapist but fuck that, I hate people. I love Astronomy. Absolutely love it. I will try to become an Astronomer. How fucked am I?

There's no point to being an astronomer unless you actually understand the physical processes you're observing, so yeah you need a MSc or PhD. It's by far the easiest field of physics though - you need some basic programming, linear algebra, trigonometry, optics, special relativity, and a working understanding of an area physics of your choice.
