It's pretty hard to convert from a devout believer into a non-believer, coming from personal experience. Dawkins, Hitchens and others represent the part of the scientific community who want to challenge the social norm of religion head on, and whilst they usually make logical and polite arguments, religious folk will still react defensively and emotionally to those challenges to their beliefs. So unfortunately, its easier to base feeling on an issue rather than going through the whole thing logically.

One of my favorites is distant starlight. There are stars thousands and millions and billions of light years away from us, and thus it took millions and billions of years for that light to reach us.

I don't think he cares that some people are religious, he cares that they have a lot of influence, even in secular countries like America. Here in the UK it's kind of two-pronged. On one hand, we're technically a Christian state, but religion doesn't play a big part in the House of Commons, only the House of Lords and the monarchy (which have virtually no power). He's against he influence of religion on secular society and against its indoctrination of children. He's basically trying to counteract religious preachers.
