But on a serious note, do you think these things should be punishable by law? I feel like you can throw "proven by science" to anything that has been DISPROVED by science to work and have no slap on the fingers.

Science doesn't prove, nor does it disprove. It creates greater disparity between most likely and most unlikely possibilities. Mathematics is the only field in which there are true proofs.

They kind of are, it's just not regulated very effectively. Partially because there's just so many products that make those claims and partially because actually what >>5223397 said. It's kind of difficult to mesh the inherent uncertainty of science with the absoluteness of legal punishments, so the resulting solution is a complicated and only partially effective system of wording things sneakily and liberal use of disclaimers in addition to graded scrutiny based on what the product is (eg, drug claims get regulated way more strictly than crappy 'as seen on tv' exercise equipment).
