Evening /sci/entists. So I was trying to explain to a friend of mine why different compounds of the same element can have such different physical properties (such as how uranium (iii) flouride has a melting point at 1000 degrees C, but uranium (vi) flouride is a gas at 60 degrees C). But all I could really come up with was "Well, they're just two different compounds with different properties."

>tldr: why exactly do compounds have different physical properties?

Changes in the shapes of combined electron clouds. This leads to changes in shape of molecules, changes in shape of crystalline structure ect.

Besides, Uranium is fucking weird because its on the upper end of the molecular weight scale. And fluorine is a mad dog powerhouse of an element.

Made my night.

Different molecular orbitals, different shapes and different reactions.

It's as "simple" as that.

You can also use polarity and the elctro-negativy scale, and isomerism to help define some physical properties, such as water expanding when it becomes ice, or brittle and malleable substances.
And yes, fluorine is a huge cock mangler of an element

OP here, I appreciate the responses.

Only thing in chemistry more frightening than fluorine is a benzine ring.
