Is this guy is the greatest mathematician of our time?

>> No.5106234

Nope, I am.

>> No.5106246

That's the guy who solved the abc conjecture, right? If so, then this is like Ramanujan's notebook. It's so advanced that we have no idea.

My favorite thread in all over the internet:

He's not.

Oh. Then who is he?

Terence Tao. Received his masters degree at age 16, and his phd at age 20. He has won a ton of awards for his work, and is the youngest person to ever won a fields medal.

>> No.5106258

>>5106254

Perelman is better.

He is the only person to win a clay maths award.

A lot of people have won a fields medal, only 1 person has won a fields medal and a clay maths medal.

>> No.5106266

>>5106258
a fields medal is definitely not Tao's only award, whereas Perelman is mostly known for his work on the poincare conjecture.
Tao has done a TON of work, and (in my opinion), receives far more praise than Perelman does.

>> No.5106282

>>5106266

Tao's work could be done by any other top Mathematician. Perelman work couldn't have been done by any other Mathematician.

Tao's not going to be known in a few years because he has done nothing special. He's done applied stuff with pdes and primes. Even then most of the work was done by Green.

Tao isn't the youngest Fields Medalist, he won it when he was about 30. Serre got his at 27, and is youngest recipient.

>> No.5106348

I'm born in a poor family, and I hate people who treat money as shit.

I hate Perelman because he refuse $1 million.

You're an entitled cunt then. Who the fuck are you that he should accept the money just so you don't feel bad?

>> No.5106381

Too early to tell, what he does very well is getting involved in blogging and getting people interested in fields outside of their own.

I didn't know Justin Long is a fucking mathematician, wow

I don't know if that's the right word, but he's declaring people should behave in the way that he wants so he can feel better. That sounds pretty selfish.

holy crap this guy looks like me
[spoiler]and my name is Terrence

So, you hate him because he doesn't care about the same things as you?
Don't you think that's a bit pathetic?

One result, doesn't collaborate well with anyone, hasn't popularised any of his or anyone elses work. Perelman confirmed for one hit wonder

>> No.5108018

Well he's certainly a lot closer to the greatest than the majority of /sci/'s retarded suggestions (most of them popsci writers).

I really like his blog, where he strives to emphasise that although he is smarter than most, what he does isn't magic; it's just using the standard means of thought in a more advanced context, with lots of knowledge.

You don't understand or have not read his reasons for refusing the medal. Please do so before insulting this man.

did i mention the medal at all?

>> No.5108066

One result? Nope. He's made more contributions to the field, however you've only heard about the most popular.

Oh, and I nearly forgot to mention, "quantity over quality"!

He's one of the top mathematicians alive right now. There are plenty others: Alain Connes, Vasek Chvatal, Grigori Perelman, Stephen Smale, Edward Witten, etc...

>> No.5108308

I think if the abc conjecture proof is correct, then the guy who proved it automatically gets that title.
