Is molecular genetics a good field of study? Anyone here pursuing it?

>> No.5086766

I think it's pretty cool. I wish I actually took Bio in highschool so this could have been an option. But I'm stuck with Physics and maths, such is life.

1st year Bio is basically 100% of grade 11/12 with 10% more detail here and there. Even if you took it right now you wouldn't really be behind anyone else considering how little people remember this kind of stuff after leaving high school.

No one on /sci/ likes any kind of molecular biology, despite that it and biochemistry make equivalent contributions to modern medicine.

Molecular genetics is really useful to all biosciences, but like other bioscience, it'll only pay off at the masters/Ph.D level.

Any reason why?

I thought hard science was any field that used experimentation and Quantifiable data. Or is that just a meme 'round these parts?

What he means is that most around here are ignorant towards anything under Biology. Unless you are studying physics and or math and earning 300k per year you are taking the easy route in life.

I'm interested in molecular sciences. I am worried I don't have the heart for post grad though... Everyone seems to say that it's necessary to flourish in this field.

i'm not studying it, but it seems interesting.

anyone else?

I've been doing a research project on chip-seq data, but it's basically from a compsci stance. I really enjoy it but i dunno how big the 'bioinformatics' field really is. I'm still looking forward to what comes from the ENCODE project though :)

you will need a phd.

Any tips on getting into grad school?

>> No.5090461

>>5088468

I got into grad school primarily by making good grades. You can get in with poor grades, but it requires some extra effort.

You should study it OP!

Obviously not a molecular geneticist, as it is very challenging.

Biotechnology and I'm on the line to study it, in order to, engineer and manufacture chemical compounds in an more optimal and cost efficient way, through bacterial-factories.

Call me a faggot I don't care :P

Oh my god, did someone SERIOUSLY just say molecular fucking genetics is not a hard science?
Actually back that up. Did someone just say molecular genetics is Biology? The subject might fall under the broad field of Biology but the application involves more chemistry than most chem majors would care to fuck with. I can't believe this 16-year-old is trying to act like he knows shit about science.

also, on getting in to grad school:
Grades are great. But working in a lab is much, much better. Especially if you go to a lab like the ones at UNC where the professors put undergraduates' names on scientific papers. One published scientific paper with your name on it is worth almost as much as 4 years of straight As.

That said, if you want to get a good job, you need to get in to a good grad school. Which means you need to be making straight As and getting your name out there.

...at least that's how my prof explained it.

Also, genetics is a great career field. It's in the same position Computer Science was in the 60s and early 70s; the field is about to explode.

Kind of vague. The process uses Chemistry but so does everything in biology. Chemistry is more of the fundamentals which can then be applied to those systems compared to in genetics where you won't learn the exact details of the reactions.

>> No.5090820

>>5090800
First off, that is completely different from saying Genetics is not a hard science. That's saying Genetics is applied chemistry (which, okay, is correct to some degree.)
Second, synthetic and organic chemistry are completely different animals, with the main difference being orgo has more complicated rules.
Third, Genetic Engineers have to have a solid concept of multiple aspects of microbiology, catalytic (well, enzymatic, but same difference) effects on reaction, and a bunch of similarly complex shit. Including a surprising amount of physics. Chemists just have to know Chemistry.

tl;dr, Genetics requires as much of a knowledge of Chemistry as a Chemist, but Chemistry does not require as much knowledge of fucking everything from the cellular level downward as Genetics.

>> No.5090835

>>5090820
Well that depends on where the chemist is (for example some chemists in my university work on telomere research.) Chemists also do require physics.
I am not the guy bad mouthing genetics I just got annoyed by the assumption that they knew more chemistry then chemists.
Chemists being between Biology and physics seems to be the forgotten field here. (unless it is homework)

Organic chemistry is a type of synthetic Chemistry. Synthetic also includes Inorganic synthesis which is more around ligands and metals . Also Organo metallic chemistry.

Oooohhhhhhh... we're miscommunicating. I didn't mean we know more about chemistry in general. I'm just saying the kinds of chemistry genetic engineers deal with is pretty hairy shit.
