How long would it take for most shit to decay due to time?

I mean if there was a civilization 20,000 years ago, would we even know about it

I understand that stone lasts the longest

you're still here? fine. We can detect how old these things are because of their carbon dating, you can google that term yourself.

>> No.5058170

>>5058166

How can you carbon date something that doesnt exist? If it decayed due to time you cannot carbon date it

>> No.5058177

Mt Rushmore will last for tens of thousands of years before weathering and erosion will begin to render it unrecognisable.

>>5058170
nothing "doesn't exist" it just changes. Same thing as the principle of atomic conservation. If you have a tool that neanderthals used to cut the fur from animals, you use carbon dating on it.

if you're talking about how long evidence of civilizations typically exist than it's up to how well it was preserved, the type of materials it was preserved (rock like you said exists for quite some time) and how well it was tended.

Im talking about like cars and computers. would time not disintegrate such things after a certain period of time? How long of a period?

>> No.5058191

>>5058186
fuck if I know. If we suddenly "didn't exist" and weren't discovered we'd most likely be covered up like Pompeii in a few hundred years, the buildings would collapse, nuclear power-plants would explode, dams would burst. Nature has a lot of ways to cover our tracks.

im fairly certain that if nuclear plants were to go critical and explode, anyone looking for evidence of past intelligent life would be able to tell that it was there by the unnaturally high radioactivity on the planet.

could be explained by a load of natural phenomenon.

a temporary fluctuation of the earth's magnetic-field could lead to a higher amount of radiation over a specific area.

this is what I suspected. Atlantis existed 9000 years ago. And the "gods" (humanoid aliens) ruled earth. All traces of this civilization have been lost

>> No.5058361

carbon dating is useless past 10k years
also, cometary bombardment is highly destructive and leaves no lasting traces such as craters.
look up the tunguska event. it happens more often throughout history than you are lead to believe.

So, it hasn't. The only lost civilizations are shitty bronze age civilizations.

look up the documentary "the world without humans". In the Doggerbank they found land animal bones which are ~20000 years. they also found a harpoon and remnants of a settlement that was several thousands years old.

Radioactive substances can be retraced for millions of years.
