Its because modern entertainment is not only crap but also has weak association. You can't really spout anything about Breaking Bad or modern tv shows, even if they're good.

But le le le le le you can express that very easily. So people latch onto it.

Aren't memes just another way to communicate?

Reading, writing, speaking, these are all "memes"

>> No.5007249

>Aren't memes just another way to communicate?

The problem is that a large constituency of the regulars on here regard this site as the internet's supersecret fight club. They identify with it and they attribute to it exclusivity which it does not actually possess. Somehow they fail to understand that this is a very popular mainstream site with

>134 million unique visitors

this year alone, not some underground, unknown website. When they see memes "in the wild", they get butthurt over the imaginary breach of exclusivity.

Most of the others just find these shitty memes annoying because they are no more than a sad attempt to seek identity through internet culture, the same way others seek identity through mainstream "subculture" music genres, etc. It's a sign of weak identity and insecurity and most of those who vocally identify with it contribute very little to it. They are seeking uniqueness in mass produced culture.

tl;dr: because faggots

Er, right. It sounds like you just came up with a couple neurological disorders/behaviors and attached them to an entire group so as to make yourself House-Tier diagnostician.

I think more likely is that it all boils down to exclusivity. The more exclusive the club, the more everyone else wants to get in and the more valued the members inside the club feel. In the 'real world' sense, the amount of members in any given club is easily measured by the subjective experience of meeting with your club or whatever. The internet flips this norm by attaching that exclusivity to immensely popular sites, therefore creating this sense of a patchwork community who are united through humor. The issue is that the club itself is full of millions of members, and that the club members delude themselves into thinking that the amount of people in the inner circle is quite small (because they never subjectively experience just how many members subscribe to their club of choice in a real world setting.)

The reason why 4chan hates reddit is obvious. 4chan flawingly sees itself as the polar opposite of reddit's popularity. Many members on 4chan still hold the delusional belief that 4chan is more exclusive (through a combination of over the top humor and shock value.) Reddit mirrors their own lack of exclusivity and instead of looking at the flaws within, they look at the mirror and punch it right dead-center.

>Reddit mirrors their own lack of exclusivity and instead of looking at the flaws within, they look at the mirror and punch it right dead-center.
The board I visit the most here is /a/. On /a/ we hate normalfags. I don't like many people on 4chan for this reason alone but most people here are still tolerable because of the anonymity.

For me reddit humour is no different than people on facebook who post images macros, it's the same shallow immaturity.

Comparing your average anon to your average redditor is like comparing a geek with an obnoxious girl who's read 3 comic books and goes attention-whore at comic-con. Redditors are proud of plastering their design all over the internet, they want an identity. Yeah, 4chan is not a secret club and it's quite popular on the Internet, but that's not by design.

>> No.5007902

>>5007848

I think the groups that comprise reddit and 4chan share a remarkably large amount of users. It's only really a small minority who use one or the other in exclusivity and usually those people are deluding themselves by believing that their 'exclusive' club of choice is inherently 'better' because it appeals to specific quirks in their personality. I think the difference (if there even really is one, over so many millions of users) between reddit users and 4chan users is that one leans slightly more towards lighthearted, narrative humor while the other leans slightly more towards expressive/evocative humor that shocks.

>> On /a/ we hate normalfags.

I think this pretty much supports my speculation. A subgroup within a larger group that polarizes the two by generalizing about one and ignoring the inconsistencies in the other.

And I think the initial design of 4chan or reddit is irrelevant. Many physical inventions were designed for a singular purpose and proved to be incredibly versatile, even opening up avenues for new needs which demanded new inventions. 4chan sort of evolved from being a specialized section of the internet dabbling in the dark arts to being a wide-encompassing internet forum filled with hundreds of subgroups with subgroups of their own. Reddit just follows the natural flow of things. As 4chan grew more popular and widespread, a need for a stopgap between the dark humor of 4chan and the light humor of the average internet user grew more and more evident. Reddit filled that gap by catering to the newer generation of internet users AND the bored non-hardcore 4chan dwellers.

It's sort of like how Hulu filled the gap between youtube and online tv show websites (which contained tons of bad quality links.) Here you had the technology AND popularity for fast video streaming (youtube) coupled with the need for more convenient online TV watching.
