alright /sci/entards

what field is going to change our way of life like no other? is it going to be genetics? nanotech? neuroscience? AI? back your claim up if you can.

None of it while the current political and economic climate remains

I am planning to study aerospace engineering

do you feel that our economic climate will be in or out of my favor?

You'll probably be making ~100-170k a year, if NASA salaries are anything to estimate by.

That being said, the amount of funding they receive is pathetic when paired against the waste that is defense spending...

I also would like to study aerospace engineering, among other things, I just don't have the money, or willingness to be in debt, at the moment!

what if i pursue it in the military sector, given its massive revenue?

can't i just work in a lab without encountering the political side of it? I'm only interested in developing newer propulsion systems and the military seems to be the way to go for budgeting.

Once we achieve post-scarcity, philosophers will be in high demand. Keep the dream alive!

That's the truth.

Own the lab. That's the only way.

how hard is it to own a lab? could i do tests with large scale nuclear weapons on sample groups like LA?

Aerospace engineer here. You will NOT make 100k-170k within your first 10 years. 50k is probably a little more realistic. Maybe 60k after 5 years.

The next question is what part of aerospace are you interested in?
If it's the space part, good luck. There are a lot of people studying that and there aren't THAT many jobs. None of my former classmates actually got jobs in this sector.

If it's the aero part, then you're more stable. There are lots of jobs with the main manufacturers (Boeing, Airbus, Embraer, Bombardier, LM, Raytheon, etc.) but also know that 99% of the engineering jobs aren't hardcore aerodynamic modeling. Each system is incredibly complicated so you'll only work on a very small percentage of the aircraft. Also note that there are a lot of jobs in maintenance where you investigate faults and such.

Owning your own lab is VERY expensive. And if you are ever a threat to the lab of a big corporation, they'll be all over you with lawyers and inspectors, trying to get you legally shut down. Chances are, they'll succeed, unless you were soaked in money and paid every possible permit.

So... if you have all that money anyway, then why are you running a lab? It's really a catch-22.

The field of "petroleum depletion". You fags keep pretending there's an infinite amount of fossil fuels to keep your technological civilization going. That's absurd.

to be honest i just want to try out theoreticals that are released as articles without having to go through all the hoops that a renowned industry leader has to. Testing different models of rocket nozzles, fuels, etc. without the restriction of scheduling, budgeting, and legislation is my true dream.
