I have an ionic air purifier and it causes static interference with my computer speakers.

I've posted in /v/ (got derailed) and /g/ (got some quality replies). Does /sci/ have any ideas on how to thwart the static noise?

Shameless self bump

Airfilter is making an electric field. Wrap it or the speakers+wire in metal. Thickness of the metal won't really matter.

Same reasons computers are in metal boxes.

get speakers with better shielding
cover them in aluminum foil

I have experienced the same thing with my air purifier. It's very obvious that it's causing the interference, but I don't know why, I'm not a physicist.

I have noticed though that the ionizer doesn't seem to make a difference, since it makes the same sound whether it's on or off.

Any suggestions on what a good brand of speaker would be with nice shielding?

ha. i had to do this once. fuck they looked ugly.

I dont think the kind of shielding a speaker has is usually made knowledgeable to consumers honestly

Just out of curiosity, how close is your purifier to the speakers? If its very close, I would suggest moving it across the room

I rearranged my entire room today to get the speakers and purifier as far apart as possible. Static still persists.

I know this probably sounds pants on head retarded, but is there any way I could get a large metal sheet or antenna and put it behind my dresser or something so that it tries to pick up the interference instead of the speakers?

New speakers probably wont help much. What might help is a shielded wire to connect your speakers. Of course, then your signal may be weaker and your speakers may not have the same volume

Still though, Id be reluctant to just buy new speakers because you might blow a fair chunk of money and find it doesnt do anything

Yeah I really don't want to buy new speakers, but if it comes down to it, something like this doesn't look too bad.

you have no understanding of electronics. please leave.

the answer has been given to you more than once already OP. either buy new speakers worth more than a meal at a respectable restaurant, or shield your current ones with aluminum foil.

he has sort of a point, ambient charges could induce errant currents in the signal wire and basically put ones where there should be zeroes, ect.

that's sort of the definition of electrical noise.
