the blacked out portions are data that was not received, or pictures of the rover parts that they are required to redact until the design documents are declassified to prevent reverse engineering.

The rover can only send data for about 14 minutes per martian day (which are slightly shorter than an earth day), at a MIND BOGGLING speed of 32 Kilobits per second.

It can communicate with a satellite orbiting Mars for 8 minutes per day at 256kbps (bits, not bytes), which can only communicate with earth about 20 minutes a day at 2Mbit/s

This means that DIAL UP is faster than Curiosity.

These photos are stitched from dozens of smaller photos, many of which need to be sent multiple times because radio waves traveling through space are subject to corruption from radiation.

According to an undiscloseable source, this time they are planning to announce the discovery (or at least indirect evidence) of live bacteria on Mars.

They have been found many years ago but the release of information had been blocked by the principal investigator to avoid injury to the religious sensitivities of the majority of the population (i.e. voters; NASA is not an independent agency, it depends on public funding).

It will be interesting to observe how this plays out. Disclosure of either discovery or indirect evidence may depend on which faction of the system party gets selected into 'power' later this year though.

You will remember this when the news hits the front page.

Except that's exactly what we will do, if significant quantities are determined. NASA /will/ have to keep quiet about it though, such a find can have serious political consequences.

How would they mine the minerals and send them back in a way that they at least break even? It's not like you can build a big cannon and just aim for Texas.

WHY NOT?
I mean, I don't expect the minerals to get intact, but why can't you build a giant cannon and shoot shit at Texas from Mars?

Does that mean that thing was already able to dig and analyze soil samples 36 years ago? And after that they sent some toy cars to Mars to keep us entertained? That's depressing.

Why are data transmission rates so bad on all spacecraft? It seems to have always been this way historically. Is it difficult to make a high-frequency radio that is resistant to radiation, or does the problem lie with keeping high-frequency, heavily modulated signals readable across large distances of space?
